Whats the sim card holder for

So under the dash next to the OBD port there is a place to put a sim card in. What is it for?

Once inserted you have a direction connection to Marvel World and you can transform your car into anything your heart desires. It is, after all, a robot in disguise. Ferrari F430 Spider F1

It’s so you can create the car to become a WiFi hotspot using that one sim....it also allows certain things to update remotely via the data card...

On my 2017 the sim reader is in the centre console cubby hole. Is it in a different location on the earlier ones?

Yes on pre 17MY it is under the steering wheel at the bottom edge of the dash....it’s also a total git to get to! You have to have your head down by the pedals to insert it!

Does the car require the SIM for data purposes (I have a 24gb 3 SIM card which has used less than 1Gb in 18 months) or can the car use bluetooth (or hotspot or USB cable connection) to my phone which has excess data.

Just thinking further I assume without the SIM card I can't use In-Control Remote? MY17 RRS 4.4d V8 Autobiography - Aintree Green (also referred to on Topix as British Racing Green)

It needs it for the extended options on the nav and the news and gracenote and a few other things but I’m pretty sure it doesn’t need it for the remote. My sim reader was faulty when I bought the car but I played about with it a bit using other data connections (connected to home WiFi, tethered to my phone, connected to mobile WiFi) but it was a ball ache. I had the reader replaced under warranty and the best thing to do IMO is get one of those three 12 or 24 month PAYG sims and forget about it. Mine works as it should do, although it’s no massive benefit having the sim - I just wanted it working like it should do.

I put the sim in my car, I pay around £5 a month for a data only service which is linked to my phone account. Only thing I assumed it does is give you the WiFi hot spot. It only does 3G not 4G too unless I’m doing something wrong.

I believe up until 2018 the SIM card tech was only 3G, and then 4G from ‘18 on. Quite why Lord only knows.

Don’t suppose anyone knows if there’s a module swap available for a 4G unit into a pre ‘18 car?
