First thing I would do is check the voltage when at idle just to make sure the alternator is doing its job,,, you should see more than 14V. It's not a problem charging the battery with it connected but I think landrover recommend connecting to the positive terminal and the earth on the body when charging. I would not reallydrive it far until you find out what is at fault,, good chance it's the battery if it's more than 4 or 5 years old, but it could fail completely at any time if that is the fault. I wouldn't be too worried about taking the battery off,, i've done mine a few times and never needed a code to reinstate anything. 2010 RRS, TDV8

If the car starts, it’s not the battery. (Or unlikely ) |

Well,,,, I would disagree slightly as twice I the past I have had a faulty battery,,, but the car still started,,,, the problem being the battery was only retaining 60% of its full charge and after a few short runs it would not start the car. What I didn't get was a red warning on the dash which is why I say check the voltage,, it can point you in the right direction. Doyou not know anyone who can check it for you if you don't own a meter??. Visit a garage and have them check it for you,, might well be an alternator fault if the red light persists. 2010 RRS, TDV8

Charging a battery for an hour will not do much good,,, charge it overnight. You can charge a faulty battery and it may look OK,,,, but as soon as you put it to use it will revert back to its faulty state,,, a cheap multimeter is a handy piece of kit to have in your toolbox,, as I say, it can point you in the right direction before you start spending money.,,, but you say youhave a warning on the dash which makes me think alternator,,,, but it's all guess work unless you test the voltages. 2010 RRS, TDV8

That good enough for most basic tests. Set it to DC volts and check across the battery terminals with the engine running,, you should see in the region of 14.6V. With the engine off,, 12.6V would indicate a full charge,,, low 12V readings points toward a discharged / faulty battery. 2010 RRS, TDV8
