Schoolboy Error

Driving into Swansea a bit late for meeting a train, so pressed on in the B-roads and hit the motorway. Strange vibration noticeable, slight wobble of the wheel. Got to Swansea and checked around the car and saw the wheel nuts on the NSR seemed a bit prominent Shocked Even more Shocked Shocked when they moved in my fingers...

Unless someone came and undid them, then I can't have tightened them after adjusting the EBC. I recall at the time deciding to use my torque wrench to set them right but I guess I only did them finger tight and forgot to do one side Rolling Eyes

NEVER EVER IN 40 YEARS OF CHANGING WHEELS HAVE I EVER FORGOTTEN TO TIGHTEN A WHEEL Big Cry Big Cry Big Cry

No damage done other than to my ego though...

I had similar once. Except I hadn't been playing with the wheels so no idea why they were loose. Had been parked in a corner slot in a multi-storey car park so wonder if someone had been trying to nick it before realising how heavy an RRS is... 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Not good but at the end of the day we are all human & make mistakes, have you checked you wheel for damage where the nut sits.? If damaged they could come lose again so it might mean a new wheel. Andy.

If it makes you feel any better, I once finished a track day (in my old E46 M3, not the RRS Laughing ) and drove home from - if memory serves - Oulton Park to Bracknell.. a little way from Oulton I started getting that characteristic "whomping" drone of a failed wheel bearing; worse turning one way than the other etc.

Convinced myself a wheel bearing had failed and chalked it up to over enthusiasm..

Got home and checked the wheel bolts to find one set of rears finger tight Shocked

Whoopsy. Good job it's only 183 miles between Oulton & Bracknell! Embarassed 2014 BMW 530d Touring, 2006 BMW 650i, 2018 Mini Cooper S

Had the same happen to, embarrassingly I took it to the local independent as I had no idea what was going on with it. Hadn't been playing with wheels or anything.

Had had the wheels balanced about 3wks before and the noise got steadily worse, when he said what the problem was it was a rather Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed , however the other mechanic said that mine had been the 3rd RRS in 2 weeks with the exact same problem..........

They didn't really know why, but tightened all the wheel nuts up again and not had a problem since. Intersetingly though the powder coating on my wheels was ridiculously thick, and I've since had the wheel refurbished and the coating is much thinner. I wondered if it was an effect of the thick powder coating and temperatures causing the wheel nuts to loosen? 2006 RRS HSE 2.7 TDV6 (The Baby one as I keep being told)

I know how you feel but trust me you’ll never do it again.

I got fired from my first job as machanic at 20 because I forgot to put a split pin a half shaft nut after a brake service, now I always check and double check. Steve

I am carrying around a little mental note that the rear hub nuts on my kit car have never been torqued .. let's hope I remember before it hits the road!

(The fronts are old fashioned spindles with twin taper bearings, so your note about a split pin reminded me - the fronts have split pins but the rears are torqued like a modern bearing) 2014 BMW 530d Touring, 2006 BMW 650i, 2018 Mini Cooper S

It's a Dax Cobra replica - Jaguar XJ40 hubs front & rear and differential, albeit with modified driveshafts.. Jaguar stuff of that era (~1990s) is a wonderful mix of imperial and metric fasteners on every part Laughing

I'm glad JLR had finally settled on metric by 2009! Mr. Green 2014 BMW 530d Touring, 2006 BMW 650i, 2018 Mini Cooper S
