My car is currently with the dealer due to a leaky dif - The rear diff pinion seal is leaking oil. (Is this common?)

While there, they have noticed an oil leak from the engine - they are cleaning off engine area to diagnose the oil leak.

The cost for this alone (minus any work on the diff) , to strip & investigate the engine oil leak are to start are £558 inc vat. This is before any work to rectify takes place.

Now obviously this is very alarming to me.. What exactly does this mean for the car. This sounds like it going to be an expensive job in total - diagnose and fix. What questions do I need to ask about what work they will be doing on the engine? Is there anything I need to watch out for? I was planning on keeping the car for a long time but I'm worried this potentially major work can lead to other problems in the future. The idea of the engine being stripped is seriously worrying me.

I have a 2014 RRS 3.0 sdv6. It has 45k miles, full dealer history (7 in last 6 years) and has been very well maintained with no expense spared and I paid above the odds to get what I thought would give me the best chance at getting one that is 'problem free' - how wrong I was.

I've had a few minor faults since I purchased in Feb, like software updates, TPMS, RRE screen issues etc. but this one is seriously stressing me out...

Any advice please? Should I be worried and what info should I be asking the dealer while the are stripping my engine apart?

I'd personally not use a main dealer but seek out a decent independent specialist in your area e.g. Oval Autos in Cradley Heath and Alltrack in Malvern are good.
Get them to sort the diff and ask them not to proceed with the rest maybe and then take it elsewhere for a diagnosis?

I'm with Rob on this. I'd get it to a decent indie. If nothing else, it'll reduce the cost. It'll probably lead to a better outcome too as LR's dealers aren't known for being meticulous and thorough in their work. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

As I was reading your post I was thinking " he's not gone to a LR Dealer has he?". So I concur with my two learned friends who've gone before me. Get it away from the dealer (assume its not warranty work) and find a good local independent LR specialist. Robin

After some toing and froing, the approved used warranty team have agreed to cover the leak as i reported a potential oil leak at the same time as the diff. (warranty expired over lockdown)

The dealer has called me to say it is a sump gasket issue and it is quite labour intensive to repair.

Is there anything I need to watch out for? Could this lead to further issues in the future if not done properly? Are there any questions I should be asking?

If the mechanic doing the job does it properly, there shouldn't be any future issues associated with it.

As above at least it’s covered by warranty but now your out of it find a local indie, perhaps like DrRob has said above. Stay far away from main dealers now  2006 2.7 TDV6 HSE in Cairns Blue.

Resurrecting this thread. Looking for help and advice....

So 7 weeks ago, under warranty (which has now expired) Main Dealer in Coventry done some work to fix oil leaks in my sump pan and rear diff.

Today, at the tyre shop I had my car on the ramp and decided to have a nose underneath....

It looks like the rear diff is still leaking along at another point towards the front of the car at the centre. Does this look like the sump?

Obviously not happy and will be calling in tomorrow morning.

Any advice and is it both the areas that they should have fixed that are at fault?

A leaking rear diff pinion seal is quite common, and they should have fixed it quite easily - but it looks like they didn't.

This is cause for concern, as it means your rear diff might have run with low oil. The same thing happened to me, and although the dealer fixed it, the bearings ran a bit dry and then the whole diff had to be replaced due to developing a whine.

If it's not whining, then it's still OK - take it back and insist that they fix it FOC, since they didn't the first time around.

the other leak is a bit harder to pinpoint, but since it's at the centre-ish of the car, it is more likely to be the gearbox or the transfer case. Only way to be sure is to remove the protection plates and have a good look around.

As others have said before: AVOID the dealer and take it to a good LR indie workshop --
