Steering wheel feedback/wobble/pulling/wandering/heavy

Hello,

Very long and annoying frustration with my 2012 RRS... I have been having issues with bad feedback through the steering wheel, car wandering slightly, pulling to the left, steering wheel wobble & vibration and heavy steering for going on at least 6 months now. I will list all of the items/procedures I have had done which haven't worked:

-All new brake pads & discs
-New steering rack
-New front lower wishbones
-ALL bushes front and rear changed to poly-bushes including anti roll bar
-Caster/camber done
-4 wheel alignment (multiple times)
-Wheel balancing (multiple times)
-Temp wheel change to see if the wheels were buckled
-Lower steering shaft UJ joint
-New front driveshafts

The list goes on, I'm sure there is more... I am spending an absolute fortune on this car to try and get the steering wheel and handling back to normal, and I am in far too deep to just sell the thing now.

I had the poly-bushes, front driveshafts and wishbones done most recently, and the car stopped pulling to the left, stopped vibrating a low speed (still continued at over 70) etc, then I took the car to be tracked (it was quite far out of alignment) and once it had been set up correctly the car started pulling drastically left again!!!

I think I have a problem with the propshaft and it seems to be quite loose which may be causing the vibration but the steering feedback is my biggest issue that I cant seem to get over - I feel everything through the wheel. (car is on 20 inch rims with Pirelli Scorpion Zero tyres).

Also the car seems to have heavy steering most of the time (not all) despite the UJ joint being replaced as I hear they cause that problem...

I could really do with some advice from someone who may have had a similar issue with theirs? HELP!!!

I haven’t had your issues but remembering some posts a while back. Wheels bearings were a hot topic and even though grabbing the road wheel and nil wobble detected a new wheel bearing solved the issue. Thoughts on warped discs. Some us get a first start of the day wobble which disappears after a mile or so.
You say you’ve been chasing it 6 months, how long have you had the car? ie was it like this from your ownership or have you known the car without this issue....... 2006 2.7 TDV6 HSE in Cairns Blue.

Hi thanks for the reply, Ive had the car going on 2.5 years now. I bought it at 55k mileage and it was perfect, no issues whatsoever until around 6 months ago, the car has now done 105k miles.

I had all the brakes and discs changed as this was one of the first things i needed to eliminate. I will update the original post to show this.

Just had the tracking redone today and still the same issues, car is showing straight but it still pulls to the left, the steering feels heavy still and the vibration/wobble is still very prominent - especially when on rough roads and after hitting bumps.

Bent/twisted chassis rails perhaps??
You have more or less everything else renewed so that's all I can think of that may be doing this.

You have chased most of the same parts as my 2013 D4.
However my steering wheel shake is Only under braking.
Mine has also benefited from new wheel bearings on the front.

Question is regarding your lower arms, genuine or whose make?
My next part for experimenting is the ball joints on the arms, as it’s been suggested these are not long lasting on anything but genuine items. Plus you can just feel a knock on rougher surface. Less than two years and under 20,000 miles they have been on.

Hopefully you find out what your issue is?

Just thinking about your issue. With that list unless I’ve missed something, could it be a sticky caliper on the near side pulling it left. Can’t think of much else. 2006 2.7 TDV6 HSE in Cairns Blue.

I second that thought, a sticking caliper will give most of those issues.

Could you borrow a laser heat tool and take some readings of all discs and calipers?

It could potentially be that, I will get that checked out on monday, but to be honest having driver the car daily with the problems above, it feels like a suspension issue? I have very limited knowledge at the moment but learning quite fast!

I will update this after ive had more work completed next week - what is being done next week is the following:

ACE filter replacement
prop shaft replacement
checking levels on the air suspension - car looks like its leaning over to the left slightly
new power steering fluid
checking calipers to see if they are sticking

So I have the car back now after more investigation work and have had the following completed

-ACE filter & fluid replacement
-Power steering fluid flushed and replaced
-Prop shaft replaced
-Front left tyre swapped to rear left as it had worn on the outside quite significantly which was causing the pulling to the left
-brake calipers checked for sticking (was not sticking)

The heavy steering seems to have been resolved with the change of fluid, and the pulling to the left appeared to be a product of the irregularly worn tyre. Also the vibration has ceased as we believe it was the loose prop shaft causing this. However, my biggest issue is still the feedback through the steering wheel and steering WOBBLE. As i said previously it feels as if it is suspension related but unsure, maybe something to do with the steering column?

I have been advised of buckled wheels which have previously been transferred to the rear of the car, my next choices are either take it to Land Rover direct and advise them of all the previous work done, or to buy a brand new set of wheels and tyres, could steering wheel wobble be caused by buckled wheels on the rear of the car?

Another thing to note... I have noticed the boots on both front air springs are missing and the area that is supposed to be covered is all rusted. I haven’t removed them and neither has the previous garage that did the work on my car, seems suspect?

There are no boots on the front air springs. They are only present on the rear Wink Kev

Steering pump is ok. Ive just changed out my wheels as they were buckled. very big improvement but something is still off, not 100%

One thing that hasn't been mentioned above are the track rods (inner and outer).

Have you considered replacing these?

Did much change when you replaced the rack? Was it a new one or a recon? Kev

Did I miss it when I read through this thread or did you check/replace your wheel bearings? Not a huge job and worth considering in my view.
I had a steering wander issue in the past and it was a mixture of front wheel bearing and tyres. My indy spotted the wheel bearing issue by driving the car up a quiet lane and gently swinging the car from left to right. You could hear a slight grinding noise from the offside front wheel and that's how he diagnosed the problem.

I had booted the car with Uniroyals asymmetric but after trying many other things I found that these tyres on my 20 inch wheels caused the wander problem and changing to Pirellis like yours (mine were 275 R20 40) the problem was solved. The difference was quite amazing. Uniroyals were great tyres but were just not right for the RRS. Robin
