As above what's the difference with "knob up or pushed down"

Hi,

“Knob up” = manual selection of terrain response setting.

“Knob down” automatic selection of terrain setting depending on what the car senses for power, traction, motion etc.

I usually operate “down” unless I specifically want something else.

The OP's RRS, assuming his profile is correct, doesn't have the auto Terrain Response as that was only fitted on L494, not L320.

The TR is pushed down to keep it out of the way, I think. I can't remember ever selecting a programme and then pushing the knob down when I had my 08 TDV8. My 12 SDV6 has a switch to change TR programmes so I can't now check.

If you select a TR programme, say mud/ruts, and then push the knob down, does it cancel the programme or does it remain selected? I would guess it'll stay selected and the knob is then just out of the way. When you turn off the engine, the programme will revert to road mode after a certain period so you can't leave it in an off road programme accidentally. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Long time since had my TDV8 but I though pushed down it's permanently active and basically does it's own thing, when raised driver can manually control different settings, which is basically what Scrumps said I guess.

Surely if it's permanently active it must allow it to do doing something, otherwise in might as well just be switched of when the knob is down. I guess it depends on how you interpret what it actualy says in the handbook, although automatic probably isn't the right description.

I think you are getting confused as TR cannot be turned off (unless there is a fault). This is normally the onroad setting and the computer runs everything - the other TR settings have to be manually selected - there is nothing automatic about it - all in the handbook - just checked.

I didn't say it could be turned off, I said it was permanently active so it must be doing something in that mode. I also said automatic was probably not the right word to describe what it does do, but if it is controlled by computer with no input from the driver in that mode some may describe that as automatic operation. I think this is a debate that could just go on and on based on choice of words.

If no special programme is selected, then the system just runs the default road-biased traction control / DSC settings. Centre diff can come in to play too, I think, but obvoiously on tarmac it's very unlikely.

Once a special programme is selected, then the various TC / DSC / HDC / centre diff locking progression are altered to suit that chosen special programme.

The question seems to be whether, once a special programme is selected, can the knob be pushed down and the selected programme still continue to work? I think it does, but I wouldn't bet my house on it. When I had my TDV8, if I was using a special programme, I always left the knob in the up position, partly because I would sometimes want to change the programme used whilst driving. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
