L494 rear diff failure

Hi everyone,

I saw this on FB just now, the workshop claims it's a common problem.

Is anyone aware of this?

Im sure their will be a recall in foreign countries but in the UK they will not have heard of any problem with the diff & we the customer will get stuffed yet again. Andy.

Surely if it was a common problem then we would have been hearing about it on this forum well before now. Possibly a bit of scaremongery and salesmanship from them. Whistle Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.

Rear diff was changed on mine at about 5k miles due to a vibration and oil leak. MY2016 HSE D SDV6 - gone due to fuel dilution problems.

Ive replaced a 494 diff at 30k due to a whine...

Not hugely common, but frustrating all the same Rolling Eyes

Australia 2010 Range Rover Sport Supercharged Java Black

My first L320 had a new rear diff at 6k miles but that was in 2009. I rejected that car for faults and was assisted into a new L320 which was brilliant. Gone - 2008 Stornoway Grey RRS 2.7 TDV6
Gone - 2009 Buckingham Blue RRS 2.7 TDV6
Gone - 2010 Alaska White RRS 5.0 V8 Aspirated
Gone - 2017 Chawton White RRS 5.0 V8 Supercharged
Current - 2010 Java Black RRS 5.0 V8 Aspirated

Hi,

Rear diff oil leak spotted at 2nd service on my 16MY AB.

Allegedly fixed however rumbling noise started about 3k miles later.

Rear diff assembly changed - and prop shaft - as signs of grease throw-out sighted when removed.

Been fine since.

I suspect diff oil seal repair not a good fix with diff in the vehicle (Pre-load checks?)

To fix rear diff pinion leak (Common fault) with new bearing and seal as per the LR mod kit you need to split the diff. Chatted to Winchester gears and have the utmost faith in them doing it sucessfully.

Tbh I donโ€™t in even LR doing this repair successfully long term. Preload and knowing what you are doing are key to success. Best left to specialist shop like Winchester i would say if out of warranty. Very reasonable too and great turnaround service offered. 3.0 SDV6 HSE L494

Nice little 1 man job in garage completed circa midnight 1c garage axle stands and high lift trolley jack. Still happy today. Loan diff quiet no backlash and no leaks ๐Ÿ˜ƒ๐Ÿ‘

I have this problem. MY16 car with 65,000 km spewing oil over the rear diff and exhaust. Transmission whine and occasional hard shunt when driving. I stopped driving the car immediately I spotted the leak.

sjoe, that sounds like quite a bad leak - mine only leaked a couple of teaspoons of oil and that was enough to warrant the diff being replaced. Shocked --

It's dripping wet all over, and has sprayed onto the off-side exhaust branch behind the diff (left-hand drive car). I guess the pattern implies a failure of a particular seal but that's beyond my knowledge. I have put a drip tray under the diff - I noticed the leak because a couple of table spoons of oil had dripped onto a tiled garage floor that I washed last week. I referred the car to the dealer earlier this year because of an intermittent violent transmission shunt when cruising. They reprogrammed the gearbox and returned the car - "no fault found". It's disappointing but it's normally a very good dealer, with a good principal and diligent workshop manager. Perhaps the diff was dry when they inspected the car.

The dealer is closed indefinitely under the coronavirus "lockdown", and the diff may be empty by the time the car reaches the dealer, but perhaps not if the oil is being ejected under pressure when the car is in motion. No matter, this car is going to the dealer on a trailer.

I guess a new diff will be required. Does anyone have an idea how much a new diff costs including fitting, before any goodwill contribution? It's a MY16 SDV8 Dynamic. I guess that LR will be quite hard-nosed whilst the global economy is tanking

Got mine fixed last year under the approved warranty,they noticed the leak during a service & got me back in with a couple of weeks to get it fixed. Andy.
