Thought I’d try the 2016 Discovery 4 head unit in my sport

So I decided I liked the extra functionality of the 2014 to 16 Entertainment System and as the systems are very similar between the 2012MY sport and the later Disco 4, I decided to give it a try.

This was just a quick 40 minute test as I was short on time so I need a weekend free to have a good go at it.

Well I can get it to work for about 5 minutes at a time but it switches off and the only way to reset it is to remove the power connector or the fuse. The car has been tricked into allowing the L319 unit into an L320 but there maybe something else I need to consider. It should work as a fellow Disco 4 forum member has the 2016 setup in his 2013 without issue so it must be the L319/L320 coding. 2019 5.0 SC SVA (Current)

There are new home screens which is the first thing you notice. I find it quicker and more responsive which is probably down to the TFT screen rather than the capacitive screen (I think the existing screen is capacitive), the sound is Meridian so has the extra sound options. If you have RSE, it’s also Meridian so there are more options to choose and you can synch both rear screens which is what it should have been from the start. It also means you have additional features (if you were to fit them) such as Water Wading and Connect to view. I did get on the screen some climate control indications but I didn’t look into those.

Like I said, it works well until about 5 minutes in when the system turns off and won’t come back until you (a) pull the fuse or (b) pull out the power connector and re-connect. I also get a lost comms DTC for the audio system so I’m wondering if goes to sleep when it shouldn’t. I’ll have to discuss it with a Top chap on the FL2 forum. 2019 5.0 SC SVA (Current)

Don’t be amazed, I’m not the brains, I get an idea and just research and give it a go. In this instance it should work but something happens at 5 minutes that I need to fix. Hopefully the clever chap I know will have an idea. If/when I can get it to work I have a connect to view module to fit and a few other gizmos. I’ve also been looking at fitting the gateway module from a 16MY Disco 4 to add some extra functions but the 2012 CJB may not support this, I need to delve into the EUCD and take a look. It’s all down to a lack of time and sometimes poor weather. 2019 5.0 SC SVA (Current)
