Bit of a problem, all suggestions welcome.

If I accelerate slowly from a slow speed all is well until I hit about 26 mph, at which point it feels like the car is being shaken in a jam jar - a very noticeable, very large shuddering as if the whole car is jumping about. The acceleration tails off but, once the speed has increased slightly, the shuddering falls away, the gearbox changes gear and all is well again.

This has only started happening after I had the main (transfer box to rear diff) propshaft replaced, the central bearing having developed too much play to get through the MoT. At the moment, I can't think of a link.

Wheel balance is where I'd start. M16 SVD8 ,4.4 HSE with a few extras, Sold R50 , Wife SQ5 , BMW R1200GSW.

If you have just had a propshaft replaced personally that is where I would start, as something could be slightly out of balance or not aligned properly.

People have reported a vibration similar to going over rumble strips caused by a binding EPB. Something else worth checking.

Not in a hurry then

I spoke to our Indie friend who wasn't able to fit it in to have a look. He suggested that for the sake of a few quid, a good first stage would be to change the brake-light lamps. Extremely sceptical, this I did and this problem (and several others) has gone away completely. I took the car along the local dual-carriageway: problem evident. Came back home, changed the lamps and took another trip down the same dual-carriageway: problem fixed.

One of the lamps was still working but a bit sooty. I have no idea how this could work: can cars have psychosomatic symptoms cured by a placebo?

Weird, would never expect changing light bulbs would sort whole car shuddering problem - just odd

On the D3, iffy brake lamps are known to cause suspension / HDC faults, but that's because the ECUs think the brakes aren't working. In one of the lamps the 5W filament looked iffy. I was starting to wonder whether I had inadvertently caused an earth loop when I wired-up the winch.

Watch this space - only time will tell.
