Clarification On 2010> RRS?

Evening,

Just a quick question if I may, looking at a facelift RRS 3.0TDV6 and trying to understand the differences each year after that brings, could someone clarify I am on the right track!

Initially it was offered with a 3.0 TDV6 with 'normal' LR gearshifter.
Then it was offered with same engine but gearbox changed in someway and it benefiitted from paddles on the steering wheel.
Lastly it went to SDV6 with the pop up rotary gear knob and 8 speed box.

Is that right and does the SDV6 differ that much from the TDV6? I am unlikely to afford a 2011> model so its really the difference between the earlier two?

Si

Also just read another post which has confused me a little, is it the TDV6 or SDV6 which is known for lunching its crankshaft?

Both, they are exactly the same engine.

I believe the paddles were an optional extra so has nothing to do with the year.

Sept 2009 (MY2010) was the major facelift.

Then, MY2012 models saw the introduction of the 8 speed gearbox with the pop-up shifter along with the motorised, single piece tailgate with chrome trim on the outside. Kev

Ah ok that’s excellent thank you, I had in my head the TDV6 was a different beast to the SDV6 and it was one that was more prone to consuming its crankshaft than the other.

Lots of threads on this I realise but is there a trigger - mileage, lack of care, failure of another complement??

Also what is the cam belt interval on the 3.0 please??

Thank you

Si

No problem.

Unfortunately, there is no known trigger as such. It has happened on some cars with very low mileage that have been very well pampered. It's just one of those things. The chances of it happening are very low, but it does happen and happened to me after just 4 months of ownership.

There are two timing belts, one on the font of the engine for crank and camshaft timing and one on the back to run the high pressure fuel pump. Off the top of my head, the interval to replace both belts is 7 years or 112k miles, whichever comes first. Kev

Again thank you kindly, that’s really helpful. I take it both belts would normally be done on a belt service then?

The crankshaft failure sounds a bit like the borescoring you get with a certain era of 911, much talked about on the internet but reality suggests chances of it happening are much lower.

That's right. Both timing belts, plus the aux belt should be changed. However, it's not unheard of for only the front belts to be changed because the rear belt is a bit of a pain for the inexperienced.

Just make sure to get a well looked after example, preferably with receipts to support the work that has been done. They are complex beasts and expensive to maintain, but they are amazing and very capable machines. Kev
