Gearbox Flush

What are the views on sucking out the gearbox fluid and changing it that way.

Just been quoted over £600 from stealers, was only thinking of a bit of preventative maintenance.

If OK, any suggestions in Sussex?

Find someone with a flushing machine. Cost is approx half that of a main dealer, with 3x the amount of oil replaced

Thanks, that was what I was thinking, but is the filter likely to be clogged, or is it more a case of the oil degenerating?

If you're going to suck it out, you may as well drain it out through undoing the plug. However, that will only get a couple of litres out as a lot of the fluid is in the torque converter.

Using a pressure sprayer, a bit of garden hose and a few jubilee clips it's dead easy to do a full fluid flush yourself through the gearbox fluid cooler just behind the front bumper.

This is what the cooler looks like. The two straight pipes are for the coolant flow, the two right angled pipes are for the gearbox fluid flow. When your engine is running, the pump in your gearbox pumps the fluid from the gearbox into the cooler via the right hand pipe, through the cooler, out of the left hand pipe and back into the torque convertor where it then flows back into the gearbox.

What you need to do is:
1. Remove the hose with the quick connector from the right hand pipe on the cooler
2. Connect your pressure sprayer to the cooler pipe disconnected in step 1
3. Position the hose with the quick connector over the top of a container to catch your old dirty fluid
4. Turn the engine on and pump as much fluid out of the gearbox as possible
5. Pump the same amount back in through the cooler using your pressure sprayer

Repeat steps 4 and 5 until the fluid being pumped out of the box is nice and clean.

A final fluid level check at the end is needed. You will need to run the engine until the fluid hits 40 degrees C, keeping the engine running, undo the filler plug on the side of the gearbox and the fluid should be a small trickle. Drain/top up as necessary.

For me, I ended up using about 20 litres of fluid. Most guys use around 12 litres. I'm just ultra fussy.

Many Disco and RRS owners use Mannol AG55 in the 6 speed box, AG60 for the 8 speed.

£270 seems excellent value, and they say 100% oil changed.

is this Gearbox Flush A regular maintenance task
how often should it be done ?
I am not noticing anything wrong with the Gearbox..

but do have 101k on clock

what are the recommendations ?

Hi Keith,

definatly worth doing every 70k... i had mine done at 115k if i remember correctly and it made a massive differece to the smoothness so much so i coulndt tell if it had changed gear if on a lazy drize.....

Keith, ZF, the manufacturer of the gearbox recommend a flush every 80,000 to 120,000 kilometers (every 50k to 75k miles) OR 8 years, whichever is sooner.

It's easy enough to do yourself, just search the disco forum. Kev
