Cracked alloy......Refurb??

A week ago last Friday I had a new set of Avon XZ7 tyres fitted, before a trip to Cornwall. Just before setting out I did all the usual checks and adjusted the tyre pressures....

While away I noticed the NSF tyre looked low, checked pressure and it read 12psi, so re inflated....next morning the same.

Anyway managed to get home and took it to the tyre fitters, they checked it and said they could not find a leak, so back home checked myself and found a leaky valve....they then refitted the tyre. Next morning flat again.

Back at the tyre fitters, refitted then re checked for leaks and found the inside rim has a crack.

SO I know that I can have it welded, however it doesn't sit right with me. Anyone had a cracked alloy welded? It's a LR wheel.

Just DONT

do it Exclamation Exclamation Exclamation

What happens if you get it welded then your on another trip and have a blow out or worse because of a weld? By law they should ban this from happening especially when it involves a 2.5 tonne machine

Sorry possibly not what u want to hear but I feel that strongly about it

Don’t have it welded,,they never last,I’ve seen plenty that have been welded & within a couple of weeks they crack at the side of the weld.

Hi there, sorry I’m late to the chat. I had my 22” rear near side wheel welded due to a cracked inside rim over 12 months ago & it’s still going strong 🤞🏻 I suppose it depends who welded it, But just had a new tyre fitted to the front near side due to a puncture & after a week & a half it’s flat this morning 😤 took it to a tyre shop & the tyre was fine but it was leaking on the inside rim so had to have it bead sealed 🤷🏼‍♂️ They assured me it will be fine as that’s what it is designed for as I was a bit sceptical 🤨 any thoughts 🤔

Gaz,the fitter should have cleaned the rim on the inside before fitting tyres,I hope he didn’t use the black gluey stuff as that is no good on alloys, they do a cream paste like stuff for alloys when they leak on the rims. Andy.

I was in Brid last weekend .. I was half tempted to find out where you work (assuming you are still a Tyrefitter Wink) and bring the RRS up so a trustworthy tyre place could do the same for me - one tyre leaks like a sieve around the rim.. RRS is a heavy vehicle, I wouldn't take the chance with a refurb.

I'm sure you can go to a scrapyard and buy the spare wheel from a wrecked one? --

A santorini black 2010 TDV8 - though you wouldn't have spotted that last weekend; I suffered a bout of CBA and didn't pump the tyres up, so came up in the 650i instead Wink Not sure which is worse on fuel, really.. Laughing Laughing

Drove in past Morrisons, though Thumbs Up I see they've finished digging everything up around Tesco since the last time I came up.. 2014 BMW 530d Touring, 2006 BMW 650i, 2018 Mini Cooper S

An update on my damaged alloy.

After much thought I decided on a visit to a highly recommended specialist local to me. Once there the tyre was removed and the crack was revealed on the inner part of the rim. It was probably an inch in length. After some discussion about the process and a look at some of his work I decided to give it a go, contrary to what I said earlier in the thread. If it had been a more extensive crack it would have been a no no..... It's been fine since.

I did have a problem with another tyre suddenly start to exhibit a slow leak..... I couldn't find the source so before taking it to be refitted I tried the over inflation trick, which appears to have worked.

Spain

Best bet post in the for sale and wanted, get a new rim. You should get a full set of rims for a couple of hundred. Even I have 4 or 5 rims of a 2011 laying around as I fitted different rims to mine, trouble is they are in Spain. In Spain - 2018 F Pace - Frightened away from the Sports due to crank failures
Gone - A couple of RRS, A couple of Disco's. However thinking of another Sport.

I’ve just been to get my 22 inch onyx alloys refurbed only to find every wheel has at least one crack (11 in total).

I’m rapidly falling out of love with with my sc 4.2.

I also only have 8 now 9 posts so can’t put a wanted ad up.

On my!
