Hi All,

i am due to replace my tyres in the comming weeks and looking into my options.

i am toying with having two sets of wheels as i can drive up to 20k in a year, one for normal everyday use and one for off road (would need to be road legal) what would be your recomendations? both wheel size and tyre (i have standard brake calipers)

Michelin Cross Climate SUV for road use - work well in the winter as well as summer, are quiet and fuel efficient.

For off road use, it depends what you're doing. Lots of mud then something like the Grabber X3 might be useful. There are remoulds available with very MT-style treads but I'm not a fan of remoulds. If mixed off road than an AT might be better. Grabber AT3, Scorpion AT+ and the Duratrac are all ATs that work well on road and will get you a long way off road too.

Or just go down the AT route to cover both in one tyre. That's what I do having used Grabber AT, Grabber AT3 and now Scorpion AT+. I briefly had Scorpion ATR which was very nice but they're as rare as you like these days.

All of the above are available in 255/55/19.

If you want to spend money on off road tyres, then get a set of 18inch Compomotive P1881D alloys to fit over the brakes and fit BFG KO2. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Another vote for the AT3s. Should be good for well over 30k miles but great in the wet and snow. I've done a very muddy pay n play in them and they kept going without embarrassing me in front of the heavily modded stuff - mind you the car is very capable too.

I bought some PD1881s but the choice of MTs for them is even more limited than for 19s, so sold them again & bought some remould MTs for a spare set of rims I own. Great but they're not the same rolling radius each! Noisy too.

Thinking about usage, I'll probably only put those on for pay n plays or field work after its been raining for a while. ATs appear to be fine for green lane days from what I've seen.

Been running AT’s for 20k + miles now and need to change due to slightly uneaven wear on the the near side and side wall damage. They are still legal but have lost a lot of confidence in them now in the wet as the front seems to be sliding without much effort so no good on country roads.

This is the main reason on asking for recommendations .

Will get the alignment sorted first but still looking for a local reputable Hunter place.. that doesn’t want to charge £120+ VAT😳

PS I’m on 20” rims so also a limiting factor..

I have been running the AT3 on 275/45/20 at 37psi all round

Might be something else and not the tyres? My AT3s are over 20k too and spend the majority of their time on country roads but no loss of front end grip. I do run 19s though, so perhaps the extra sidewall (55) helps.

Has anyone ran 55 profile on a 20" rim? is it even possible with no mods or good for the susspension?

PC76 I had 255x55x20 A/T 3’s on my FFRR, they were fabulous. I’ve used grabbers for years all my Discos and FFRR’s have had them. Getting a set of 275x45x20’s fitted on the RRS on Friday.

When I was running the 55’s on my FFRR, I checked the speedo against my garmin gps and they were perfectly matched to each other. The 20’s were an upgrade from the standard 19’s. the only thing I did was alter the tyre size via the IID tool. Current: 2010 RRS 3.6 TDV8 HSE

Not sure what to stick on my supercharged sport as not sure it AT3 will cope with all the power I no it’s only as fast as I press the pedal 61 AB 5.0 supercharged rocket

ShooterNeil, I had A/T 3’s on my last FFRR, It was the 4.4 TDV8 which was tuned to run 350bhp and 900nm. The tyres are speed rated to 150 mph also. I think they will cope with you hooning around in your SC..

The Grabber AT3 features three new technologies from General Tire that allow for high grip both on and off-road, enhanced acoustic performance and improved mileage.

The technologies consist of “TracGen”, which includes an open shoulder design, traction ridges which the developers call “traction pockets and sipes arranged at different angles to enhance grip properties.

“DuraGen”, is a rubber compound that provides excellent rip resistance and improves mileage in rough terrain. This combination of design features boost the self-cleaning properties of the tread, permits good interlocking with loose surfaces and provides a large number of edges to deliver grip in every direction.

The third technology, known as “ComfortBalance” demonstrates the developers’ success in overcoming the conflicting interests of ride comfort on road and good off-road grip. The balanced block geometry of the tread with low stiffness and the specially modified arrangement of the blocks in the center of the tread reduce vibration in the tyre, providing good ride comfort on the road.

On wet and dry surfaces, the new Grabber AT3 performs at the same high level as its predecessor, while traction on snow has been substantially improved. In off-road use, grip in mud and on wet grass has been improved and the tyre presents higher resistance to tread damage than its predecessor.

The Grabber AT3 will be available in 44 sizes for rims between 15 and 20 inches, with an additional 20 LT and C sizes to follow in the spring of 2017. These tyres are approved for speeds of up to 150 mph and as an all-season tyre, the Grabber AT3 bears the M+S mark and the snowflake symbol to signify safe handling on snow-covered surfaces. Current: 2010 RRS 3.6 TDV8 HSE

Looking at H or V rated AT3's again why would the V rated tyre give better wet proformance?

The difference is in the construction, the Hbrated will have only one top layer maybe and the V will have 2. Also the V rated will have stiffer sidewalls for let’s call it spirited driving the H will have softer walls for more comfort, and so it goes on. No point in paying for something you don’t need! So unless you balls out everywhere and like a stiffer ride (no pun intended ) go for the H rated one..  Current: 2010 RRS 3.6 TDV8 HSE
