United Kingdom 2005 Range Rover Sport Supercharged HSE Buckingham Blue

Hi, again, Paddi

Well, i've just been over to British Parts (Stevenage) to get a brake switch. Took a slow run there 50 - 60mph, no problems and no faults. Then to Biggleswade, same speeds, No faults.

So on the way home i drove hard, fast acceleration, high speed, got home selected R all the faults back, so it is looking like a Temperature problem. I will however change the battery, as i've the LPG system using juice too.

I do agree, doing the job yourself is messy and TBH it's not that much more expensive getting it done by an exspert.

BTW, the switch didn't change anything

When you were at S*** Part were you served by a really good bloke called Richard by any chance? He used to be at Porsche Hatfield and we still miss him Big Cry

Pity the pedal switch didn't help but at least you can rule it out and it wont give any trouble for a while.

I wonder if the gearbox is low on fluid - it can be checked but the engine has to be running and everything up to temperature.

Just looking for any information about that P601 generic OBD2 code and it seems it indicate failing memory in an ECU but this link had something interesting to say:
https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/-p060...er-clayton

In particular:
What causes the P0601 code?

Quote:
The most common causes of the P0601 code are:

ECU failing or has failed
Low voltage to the ECU

and

Common mistakes when diagnosing the P0601 code

The most common mistake is not checking that the ECU is receiving proper voltage, the ECU then tests bad and is replaced when it is not the cause. All steps must be followed as P0601 can be a difficult code to diagnose with intermittent issues.

So failing battery or a high resistance somewhere looking a possibility? Does your Hawkeye allow you to live monitor voltages? 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

Hi Paddi,

Sorry for the late reply, work, life ..... you know.

The info is very enlightening and useful.

i have replaced to battery and the brake switch, no joy.

The mech at Landers said there reader showed P0601, but i've never seen it on my hawkeye. The hawkeye does have "Live Data" but for some reason when i select it it will show for about 30 secs then drop out "Lost data signal" something along those lines.

I've emailed Beamach, and they say it the ODB connection, but they would check my unit out for me. Unfortunately i need it every day, to clear the TDC's.

I've resistance checked between CAN H/L and that/'s all good (63 ohms)

After the last "fast" drive i couldn't select gears without error messages and it's when moving through "R" that it happens, so i found briskly moving through "R" and there's no messages. So it's something with the reverse switching configuration.

It's about £1400 exc vat for a new Mechtronic unit. I have emailed Beds Auto gearboxes, but had no reply. I may go over there when i'm off shift and ask about a flush.

Ive not yet flashed the memory yet, i think that's on of the next steps.

S*** Parts, no, some young kid.

I'll keep you all posted

Simon

As mentioned earlier Beds Auto Gearboxes not the best when it comes to wielding the spanners. Go to JGS 4X4 if you want to try the gearbox flush. I don't think BAG have the special flushing machine. If a flush and reflash doesn't help then it would look like a problem with the mechatronic and BAG might be able to help out with a reconditioned unit? 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

Hi Paddi
I have been in touch with JGS 4X4, just got to arrange a date.
I have narrowed to fault down to position indication when selecting "reverse". moving swiftly from "P" to "N" & "D" and vice-versa i get no fail messaged. when selecting "R", from "P" or "N" then fails flash up. She drives ok in "R".
JGS will be first then a TCM program flash ...... we see what happens Rolling Eyes Neutral

Best of luck. Be surprised if JGS don't have the facility to flash the TCM firmware. They may also suggest resetting the gearbox adaptations as that is routine after a gearbox flush.
Just a thought - have you had a look inside the rear light clusters in case there's something wrong in there; corrosion or trapped wires, faulty lamps?
Since yours seems to be an oddball fault like the one I had wouldn't be surprised if it turns out to be a problem with the mechatronic but it is certainly worth trying the less expensive fixes first; as you are doing. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

Well, after a year and a half of attempting to save the funds for a replacement TCM (£1800) and resetting the box every time i reverse, it became the norm.
Anyway, returning from Nottingham last Sunday The Sat nav/landrover screen started to flicker off & on and the radio did the same, in sequence with the screen.
I stopped and turned the ignition off and removed the key, for a few minutes. restarted the engine and the radio gave a loud "buzzing" sound, but the CD player worked ok, but the Screen only showed the Landrover screen.
Got home, Reversed into my drive and the Gearbox operated correctly (showing R) and reversing normally (the radio still buzzed).
Next morning started the car, Radio worked fine, satnav/LR screen worked fine,"R" (reverse) worked fine.
This week the car has run smoothly, gearbox the smoothest ever, radio satnav fine.
This morning started the car, selected "R" gearbox went into fault (same as before).

The question is, is this a TCM Fault, as suggested by two independent LR dealerships who tested it for a day or is this pointing to a electrical fault located somewhere else.

Hi, what a sad kerfuffle

Mileage and maintenance history of gear box?

Gear box could be fubar, but on the recent info imo worth checking following before shelling out:

Battery voltage – faulty alternator (just changed mine, charging with 14.6V, stopped 13V overnight 12.5V disconnect battery 12.8V) they absolutely hate low voltage.

Grounding points, especially where it has been wet, but can be anywhere, use ground distribution in wm

Connectors, power off and using electrical cleaner spray and massage connector into good contact.

Extra ground cable to battery, old one could be corroded, check resistance

A hard reset now and then, (like in the office: have you tried switching it off &….)

Best of luck

This is a long shot but it’s free to check, disconnect your battery and take out each connector to the CJB and check for condition of both CJB and harness connector. There are maybe 8ish connectors to it. Also check each fuse by pulling out and check the connections (my surround cameras failed last week, turned out the fuse hadn’t blown but was tarnished and lost continuity).

It sounds like you may have water ingress.

Also check the 4 connectors mounted behind the left kick panel (the one with the bonnet release handle). 3 going up and down and one going inwards to outwards. Water could track along the loom.

Bare in mind that the water could be gone but any corrosion will remain. 2019 5.0 SC SVA (Current)

Hi Rover 75, thank you.

I have done most of the things, new alternator early this year but i will have another look at the earth points and the fuse/relay boxes.

I was thinking of a gearbox flush, it's a start.

Hi Brit Plumber, thank you.

I will have a look at these items.

Hi Socast,

If i can find a "temporary" fix, it will give me the breathing space to raise the funds. I do agree that a recon box will be needed. Never had these problems with my old P38 "tougher box" Confused

I'll keep you all posted on my progress.

If it comes to a new/recon unit, then these guys are worth a look, and not too far from you in Shefford. They're on the old A10 nr. Ware, Just south of Puckeridge. I'll be using them on mine (D4 / 140k miles with 2x Dr. Tranny added after a juddder).
