crankshaft diy removal

Hi All
i have a 2011 rrs 3l tdv6 and i have been told the crankshaft has seized, i have also been told that it is not possible to do it yourself as the camshaft has to be heated up to get it out, i was hoping to be able to get underneath and drop it out from there etc. so basically is it a diy job or not. thanks

sorry made a mistake i am referring to the crankshaft not the camshaft

well you need to disconnect it from the gearbox.
and disconnect it the other end (remove oil pump?)

Undo many bolts holding it in.

The trouble is the crank breaking usually scraps the engine block so little point

excuse my ignorance but if it is just the crankshaft that has gone and there is no other sign of damage how does it scrap the engine.

There’s some photos on here or Disco 4 site from a independent showing a section of engine block sheared off inside after a crank shaft fail. 2019 5.0 SC SVA (Current)

thanks i will have a look, tbh i was hoping it was just a case of the shells slipping as this is a known fault, at some stage i will get underneath and take the sump off and have a look and you never know i might be lucky.

They have an upper and lower sump.

To remove the upper sump you need to remove the fan, fan cowling, aux belt tensioner. (to slide foward and up)
Pull dip stick tube out (where fitted), undo some steering pipes...


PM this guy. I'm sure he will give you some prices/info.

He had his 3.0 engine reconned.

As Mike says, the blocks can warp on these engines when the cranks snap. There have been numerous reports of snapped cranks being replaced along with new bearings then shortly after - bang, it goes again.

Make sure to get all injectors tested because this could be the root cause. Out of spec injector = engine imbalance = spun bearing = snapped crank Kev

i think its a trip to halfords for a manual first, i have no choice but to try and do this myself, i was 2 days away from px this car for a 2016 hse when this happened so i still went ahead with the purchase and i only had it 2 weeks when it was stolen, it was recovered but was a write off due to a high speed police chase and i got left 12k out of pocket because of no gap insurance which i had never heard of so at the moment i am still paying for a car i dont have and now my only option is to try and get this one back on the road for as little money as possible.
