scraping noise coming from new brakes

Hi chaps
need some help, my range rover sport 2005 tdv6 was shaking alot around 40mph onwards, i had balancing done with no resolve, so i had the front brakes checked and the garage said they were knackered, so i had new brake pads and discs fitted, the shake was till there and it started to make a scraping noise aswell now, more louder on lower speeds, you can hear it was coming from the wheels, also noticed brake pedal was soft they said will harden after bedding in the brakes. After checking the drivers side hub had play, so i had that changed, the steering shake has redunced alot but the grindin noise is still there and has slight steering shake aswell. I also had brand new calipers fitted so they cannot be sticking. Also the front tyres are new, any help as this noise is very annoying and something is scrapping, garage had look said they cannot see anything?? Big Cry

what garage was it?
indie or some general jokers?

soft brake pedal is not something that will fix itself

vibration issue... have you checked the suspension bushes? outer ball joint on upper and lower arms? what about wheel bearings?

the grinding noise could be wheel bearings. or the drive shaft UJs 2007 TDV6 RRS HSE..now gone

its a independant garage, been using them for quite long time, the scraping noise was not there before i changed the brakes, its appeared after, had mot 2 months ago no advisories on anything, and both bearings have been changed, but the pedal is still soft, is it possible the pads have not been inserted correctley? as after a short drive the discs are very hot or is this normal?

Sounds like you may have a couple of issues.

Is the steering wobble when breaking or just driving straight? if when breaking then the discs have warped. if driving straight then first suspect would be incorrect wheel balance, this tends to show at a set speed and can reduce the faster you go.


Check for play in your bearings, if they have used a cheap set it is not unknown for them to have play from new.
Check the rear protection plate and make sure it's not been deformed and now rubbing against the disc. check for stones trapped between disc and pads
Soft brake peddle is air in the lines, replace brake fluid ensuring proper bleeding
Check if caliper is moving freely i have had the slide bolts stick and cause the disc to warp.

all of the above you can do yourself with no or little help from anyone if you are confident.

what area are you in, other members could recommend a reputable independent who would give you knowledgeable and trustworthy advice.

it has slight wobble in straight not braking, had the balancing done aswell, only had front brakes done and we checked if the brake cover is hitting but its clear, also it only started making this noise after the brakes were chnaged, the calipers are new, if the brakes are not bled properley could this cause the caliper to stick?

After you’ve driven a while, splash some water on your discs to see if they hiss. I reckon the pistons are corroded or dirty. When pads are changed the material is much thicker and the previously exposed section of piston now need to slide in and out of the caliper. They can come out ok under brake pressure but don’t go in as well as there’s no pressure to withdraw them. My opinion is you need a caliper and piston clean up and possibly an overhaul. As for the wobble, do you have a light chattering through the wheel when driving slow over a reasonably uneven road? 2019 5.0 SC SVA (Current)

If I'm reading the original post correctly the OP has already had new callipers fitted and the fault is still there, but I could be wrong, could the guide pins/slide be partially siezed causing caliper to stick if that is the cause of the noise.

Deleted my reply as Col has said, I missed the last part of the OPs message stating the callipers had been replaced.

I’d still check for the discs getting hot as a collapsed brake pipe can cause similar issues. A reduced pipe bore will restrict the return of fluid. 2019 5.0 SC SVA (Current)
