Fairy Lights as DRLs L320

I'm very pleased with myself and expect lots of other members have already done this mod but if not it's an easy mod to do using the LED side lights as DRLs. I'm no way technically minded when it comes to cars my mate usually changed the windscreen wiper blades over for me when I need them changing..... Laughing

For a while now I've been turning on my sidelights whenever I remember too using them as DRLs which I think look really nice! But I do sometimes forget to switch them on, sometimes forget to switch them back off but more often than not forget to switch on my dipped headlights when it gets dark because the dash lights come on with the side lights and like most I'm now used to auto lights! So to get around this problem I followed a simple thread from those lovely chaps over on the D4 forum which has pictures to follow for simple folk like me..... Laughing But this really isn't hard at all just a bit difficult to get to.

I was quoted £75 by my local car audio company to do this for me, I beleive it cost me about £17 from Halfords for 4x fused patched leads but only because I was too lazy to make my own up. I already had a few connectors kicking around the garage together with some electrical tape. It's a bit fiddlerly but only because of where the fuses are that need to be changed over which are in the fuse box behind the bottom passenger glove box. Well worth doing IMHO

Here's the thread if you are interested?

https://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/d4-fairy-li...41032.html Cheers Laurence.

No I didn't. I gave up waiting for it to arriver to be honest! I had an hour to spare today, all the parts except the switch and really wanted to get it done so I thought that I may as well just get on with it... Thumbs Up I may fit the switch at a later stage when it finally arrives?? Cheers Laurence.

Exactly the same as I did! I fitted the cables first, then whipped them out and put the switch in around a month or so later. Kev

Laughing Laughing What an impatient lot we are on here... Thumbs Up
What switch did you fit? Did you leave it hanging behind the glove box or fix it to something? Cheers Laurence.

Hi Jason,

All the pictures and list of items you need are all on the link in my first post. I can post you some of mine but they won't look much different from the once's on the link.

This is what I did

Purchased 4x fused patch leads from halfords (link below)
https://www.halfords.com/workshop-tools/ga...hgreferral

I made two pairs of leads out of the four single leads joining two together with an Autoleads In-Line Crimp Connectors
I used a crimping connector tool to connect the Autoleads In-Line Crimp Connectors to the leads
Both of these items listed in the link below
https://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores...+connector

So now you should have two fused patched leads with fuses on each end a bit like the one's below but yours will have a connector in the middle
http://www.disco3.co.uk/gallery/albums/use...e~143.jpeg
Open the glove box on passenger side of the car pinch in the sides where its held to the dash, it should just hange down (remove contents or it will spill out on your footwell)
Your going to need a good small torch you'll see the fuse box in the upper left side of the opening under the dash.
Remove fuses 49 / 24 / 50 / 25 This can be done with either the red fuse tool remover if its still in there or some long nose pliers. If you use the latter make sure you don't short anything with the metal pliers if you haven't disconnected the battery!
Its advisable to disconnect the battery before you take the fuses out
Before following the next instruction when you insert the new fuses in to the fuse holder insert it with the patch lead coming out of the fuse at the top of the fuse not coming out of the bottom of the fuse
Now simply put one fuse from end of the newly made patch lead in to fuse number 49 and the other end of the same patch lead in to fuse number 24
With the other lead put one fuse into fuse number 50 and the other in to fuse number 25
So you have now connected/joined fuse 49 to fuse 24 with one lead
And with the other lead connected fuse 50 to fuse 25
It should look something like this

Looks ok but I agree that LEDs look really good, should’ve been DRLs as standard from the factory IMHO.
How did you fit the current LEDs? Are they stuck on the front of the light lenses or inside? Cheers Laurence.

They are stuck on the front of the existing lenses, but they are right at the bottom and are black so don't really notice, they come on when ignition switched on and then go off 20 seconds after ignition turned off. I wired them from a blank ignition live fuse in engine bay.
My last one I added drill rings inside the headlights.

Job done.
The whole job took less than 10 minutes to do, such a simple job with great results.
Thanks for a great and easy modification

2 things I thought would be great to look at.
Firstly, if it could be done to just illuminate front LED's only with rears off, but looking at your thread on this it would be a little bit more work.
Secondly, it would be great if we could install brighter LED's into the headlights

I did the upgrade that Laurence (Buster007) described.
When you unlock the car the led rings light up and you use them as DRLs, headlights work as normal.
Lock the car and the lights go off
Bought the 4 leads from Halford for £4.40 each, then installed as his guide.
