2010 HSE 3.0 V6, 63k, has developed a rotational rumble from the rear.
-only does it when warm, 5+ miles or so
-forward and reverse
-EPB replaced 6 months ago, working correctly, no binding (rolls easily on neutral)
-only audible at walking pace to about 10mph
-doesn't increase to a hum when going faster
-no clunks
-when raised to off road height, it becomes inaudible.
My initial thoughts were binding EPB, but not apparently binding plus was adjusted on the new EPB being fitted. Maybe wheel bearing but it passed it's MOT in August and I thought they became louder the faster you go. Prop shaft centre bearing was another thought, but they are supposed to clunk aren't they? Possible knackered UJ on the prop?
It's booked in next week, but any ideas gratefully received.

It could be a feathered tyre,,ive had this problem loads of times,,sounds like a bearing but it’s a tyre,,rub your hand around the edge or the inside of the tyre & if it’s feathered you will feel a up down motion on the tread.

Cheers Andy, I usually give the tyres a visual check at least every week (they get a cursory check each time before I leave home, don't want to drive on a flat and ruin it), but I will get out tomorrow and give them a good look over.
I should perhaps have mentioned that it's not a constant rumble, more cyclical every revolution or so, if it had been a click/tapping noise I would have thought it was a stone in the tread. The wheels are balanced and there is no vibration as I would expect with a miss-balance.

That is one possibility that I had considered Tim. That it was MOT'd 4 months and probably only a couple of thousand miles ago, and it not getting louder with an increase in speed makes me less certain. I have had a front wheel bearing go on my D3, which made no noise at all, so I appreciate noise isn't definitive.
I'm sure the indi I use will have a failed wheel bearing in mind when he gets it on the lift, but I welcome any experience/suggestions.

Have you driven any gravel tracks or through and mud/stones mixture recently? Sometimes small stones get suck in disc guards on my Defender and can make a similar noise which turns into a squeal until the stone has worn away enough to drop out. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
