How can I take my plate OFF retention

Hi

I had a private reg on my previous RRS. I took it off when I sold it and put it on retention. That was in 2011.

I now want to put it on the 2017 RRS I'm about to buy.

How do I go about doing this? Can't seem to find the details anywhere online. I've been mad for flipping years, absolutely years, over the edge for yonks.

when you retain it, you can do it for 1 or 2 or 3 years from memory.

So if you havn't been paying the retention, you may have lost it.

If you give us the reg I can tell you if its on another car

You should have received a retention certificate from the DVLA when you put the plate on retention, when you want to re-assign the plate then you fill out the re-assigned details and post it to them or go onto the DVLA website where you can reassign the reg instantly - you will need the V5C for the car that you are assigning the plate to. I have just been through this twice in the last fortnight removing my FAST RRS plate and putting it on retention and then re-assigning it and putting a plate onto my new car that has been on retention.
In the case if the FAST plate incouldn’t do it on line as the car was first registered with that plate so you need a new age related general issue number plate and a new V5C. Usually if you do it 1st thing on a Monday you will have the new paperwork by the Friday. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

As from March 2015 a Number Plate Retention Certificate last for 10 years costing £80.00 with no annual retention fee. Prior to that date there was a annual fee, if you did not pay it as previoulsy stated you may have lost it, the best solution would probably be to contact the DVLA to see if certificates prior to that date were automaticaly extended. If not, if it has not been re-issued you may be able to get it back, but not sure on that one.

Cheers
Col

It’s a very quick and efficient system now when you do it on line. Much improved over the snail mail way of doing things and something DVLA appear to have unusually mastered. 2019 5.0 SC SVA (Current)

My sport was first registered with my plate, and when I took it off on-line it gave me a age related plate to put on straight away, Just have to show confirmation I think to get one made up. I think you have 14 days to do it, or so the dealer said, I did leave the plate on it before the crank went a week later ( so the dealer made up the new plates and not me 😉 ) 2015 HSE SDV6 Scotia Grey, ebony / lunar, colour coded, deployable steps, TV, sliding pano and a few other bits. Just to add,

If you were placing a plate off retention on a new car then it’s easily done via the car dealership and retention certificate online.

If you are placing the plate onto a used car, you first have to put the car into your own name, wait for the V5C ( log book ) to arrive with your name on it and then transfer online immediately with your retention certificate details and the V5C number. Then you can put the retained number on the vehicle straight away. Obviously Insurance need to be informed but taxation is changed automatically.

I hope this helps

Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Please note; sometimes it might not be possible on line and there will be a flag come up on screen to send all documents to DVLA. Only happened once personally and I was informed it was an audit and nothing to worry about, the only thing was it took about a week and half to get the V5C returned with the retained plate on it.

(if retention doc lost) Get in touch with DVLA, you will probably have to back pay them and then they will sort it all out for you. SVR 2018 in Santorini Black.
