England 2007 Range Rover Sport TDV6 HSE Java Black
Won't warm up

Changed thermostat and coolant
On 2.7 sport gone through bleeding procedure
Twice now temp gauge only goes up a 1/4
Won't go up to halfway on gauge where it use to be
Had heaters on full blast getting hot from heaters
But viscous fan keeps kicking in and out
Is it possible new stat is stuck shut
Thank you for any advice No friends no favours

This won’t help much Embarassed but I do seem to remember some other comments on here about warming up and IIRC the solution was a new thermostat. However as you’ve already done that it would be a real Censored if that was the fault. That viscous fan does sound a bit suspect.

please don't quote me... as I'm not to sure on how the air con is setup on the RRS...

Did you turn off the air con when the heat was blowing? the aircon would normally start the fan, best to have it switched off if it is an option.

Also are you driving to get the engine warmed up?

Yes drove it over an hour
Temp gauge only up to Quarter way
Used to go half way
Air con off
The way my luck is it will be the
New stat I will replace it again week end
And update in case anyone has this
Problem No friends no favours

press the ECO button on the climate control (this shuts the AC Off) and then see if the vicious fan is behaving better, and see if you get an improvmeent

In my opinion if the thermostat was failed open, it would take a long time to get to temp. If it failed closed it would get Very Hot under load and very quick.

Have you thought about the temp sensor? If you can find it, you could remove it, reattach to the wiring and see if it reads correctly by submerseing it in water from a boiled kettle. You also put a thermometer against a pipe to see what the temp is reading. 2019 5.0 SC SVA (Current)

Mine is doing the same takes what i think is twice as long to warm up have got a new thermostat to go in Thumbs Up

I pressed eco button and monitored
Fan while idling
Cured fan it stopped comeing on and off
And after about 30 mins idling
Temp gauge sitting where it normally sits
Found out air con empty as well
So I will get it recharged
Ordered a new expansion cap
And stat
I will check temp sensor tonight after work

Not to be a smart arse, but the thermostat is closed when cold and opens when hot.

So when the engine is cold the closed thermostat bypasses the radiator and circulates the water round the engine to heat it up faster, then once it reaches the right temp the wax in the thermostat expands forcing it open and allowing the water to be cooled by the radiator. You can test your thermostat is working by dropping it into a cup of boiling water Thumbs Up

My money would be on the sealing ring round the edge of the thermostat being pinched/torn and allowing coolant past it.

Usually story is, for the cost of the thermostat, you may as well replace it if you have it out. But nice to establish a cause.

Thermostat's used to have a small bypass hole, so doubt a sealing gasket would make much of a difference ?

speaking from experience the seal being torn/failing does keep the engine from getting warm, and that’s on the 4.2. So a diesel would never warm up.

The thermostat on the 2.7
Sits below rad with about 6 or 7 hoses
Connecting to it I've put a new water outlet assembly on top
Of engine no stat in there mine split so I opened it up
To see what was in there
Will be replacing thermostat
Rad cap
Check temp sensor
On Sunday due to working Saturday
Will update once done thank you
