2018 SVR 2 Week in review

ok so some of the you may well know I rejected my long awaited SVR from Stratstone Teesside and purchased a 2018 SVR from Urban Automotive.

One of the main reasons for the Urban purchase as well is because when I finally managed to view and inspect the new 2018 SVR it is a major let down from the original SVR and the main reasons for me were;

1-Rear exhaust brushed finish, looks rubbish and no where near as aggressive as the older model, it may have been ok if they offered it in a gloss black option but they didnt?
2-Rear diffuser, since this is now body coloured and not black as per the older SVR it really makes the rear end of the new SVR look again less aggressive.
3-Side Skirts, again they have lost the lower black trim and colour coded these and they just dont suit the side profile at all.
4-Brake Callipers - Red or black and no longer brembo again a let down

Is it me or does the new Sport look like the old SVR and the new SVR look more conservative?

Dont get me wrong I love the new bonnet scoops on the new SVR but other than that it has really been tamed down, which brings me onto the interior.

WHEELS - I opted for the 22" and when I saw them in the flesh they just looked rubbish, didnt fill the arches at all and were not even on the same level as the old style 22" so wheel selection from JLR is cr*p

SEATS - Wow these are terrible, really poor quality , almost look like they are aftermarket, baggy leather, odd stitching and nothing sporty about them at all, the old seats were fantastic and these new ones are maybe too comfortable and look like they were rushed.

DASH - why have the removed the SVR badge above the glove box? I used to like that! And also when in dynamic mode i don.t like the fact that the instrument cluster no longer goes red/carbon etc it stays exactly the same except for the interior mood lighting changing to red - BORING

SAT NAV Big Cry This has to be the wrost and most complicated Sat Nav in the world, it is rubbish! Not only is it impossible to configure and set a destination it is just so complex to use,

Positives - I do like that the new finish on the window buttons and other interior trims are now better quality!

New Engine? - ok its not new, but tuned, is the extra 25BHP noticeable...no it is not.

Overall I am happy with certain aspects of the new SVR but i dont feel it is a major improvement and style wise it is not as good looking as the old one.

This for me was one of the major factors on buying the Urban Automotive edition as style wise it is absolutely spot on, proper quality, carbon parts, better wheel options, better front and rear styling...pics to follow Current

I totally agree with you JPR on nearly all what you've said,,The new SVR doesn't stand out from the HSE now,,before when a svr was coming towards you you knew it was a svr,,,now its just ow look another sport. If I was in the market for a svr I would be looking for a low mileage 17/67 plate as opposed to the new my18 model.Probably LR saving money again.

Or get a 18 plate 5.0 supercharged, if you want the petrol and power, the SVR isnt really offering much more now, since the new Sport looks better front and rear., Current

You should have the svr badge above the glovebox, unless it's been removed by urban, see attached pic, i agree with you about the dynamic mode, if you look hard at the dials you will see the shading that follows the rev and speed needles is red, I agree with you they are poor efforts though!

Thanks for your thoughts JPR. I think its more as you have said above, the normal sports are much improved and to the untrained eye look like SVR,s.

What about the sound? SVR 2018 in Santorini Black.

Badge issue sorted, regarding exhaust as far as the one on the Urban it sounds a lot more aggressive than my old SVR but i do drive in Dynamic/Sport but its definitely louder and very very raspy, with longer pops and crackles on downshifts. I think it also has maybe something to do witht he fact that on the Urban SVR's the whole rear and front end are purely carbon, so maybe they dont dumb the sound down more? When i get it cleaned this week ill upload all pics so you can see the amount of carbon bits, visible and hidden they put into their cars. But the quality of craftmanship on the tailpipes etc etc is very good.

So good in fact im about to take delivery of another urban vehicle in 3 weeks Wink Current

Exactly, maybe in hindsight the new SVR does look good in certain aspects but the issue is they made the new sport great! If ou look at the old Sport 2013> then the SVR 2015> the SVR just looked so great with its kit.

JLR have now diluted this with the loss of brembo and aggressive kit etc I just hope the dont go down the BMW-M or AMG route where you can get SVR/SVO styling and badges on standard cars...... Current

I don't believe Urban change any of the exhaust they just fit new end trims, JPR can you confirm this?

Oh JPR do the screens all work fine on the Urban cars? Wink SVR 2018 in Santorini Black.

Just run down to look, so it looks like the system is cut and then floats to the Urban style trims, maybe louder because of this? As it now resonates from pipe and not finisher, i dont know but im really happy with the sound! Current

Well thats cheered me up waiting for mine June-ish Rolling with laughter

That said, coming from a 2yr old Evoque not having had a RR Sport before ... means i won't be able to compare as much. That said, if the noise I've seen/heard from pre MY18 SVRs is much different (less noise) i would be pretty Censored ed if I'm honest as that is partly what sold it for me. MY18 Range Rover Sport SVR (18' - current)

I won't lie, this post actually really helps ease my pain. I cancelled my order for a MY18 SVR and picked up a used MY16 SVR instead a few weeks ago. I'm really happy with the car. I think I had major FOMO with respect to the new tech and new seats and I'm happy to hear the seats aren't really better. The tech/nav/screens can't possibly be worse but still nice to know it's nothing to feel like I'm missing out.

Also, my favorite parts of the SVR are the rear treatment with the diffuser and exhaust pipes and I have to agree the new treatment is really subdued. Definitely like the older style more. Also didn't hurt to save the $40K.

Everyone has there own opinion obviously but for me i like and prefer all the changes that have been made to the new 18 model. I like the look of the new seats, rectangle exhaust trim coloured side skirts, the new 22" wheels are lovely the new lights are years ahead, bonnet vents, new steering wheel. Perhaps they should have still offered Blue callipers but thats about it, so as you see i love the new look but cant comment on the sound but reading the reviews out today they all seem to think it sounds antisocial so all good. SVR 2018 in Santorini Black.
