Thinking of a 2007 tdv8

Good evening all after having a number of FFRR and discovery’s I am now thinking of a RRS a TDV8 on a 2007 and have a few questions is there anything I need to look out for are brembo brakes fitted as standard to the tdv8 what coulor wood was available the one I am looking at has black leather also on the headrests it looks like it has some type of controls but there isn’t a tv screen in the headrest also is there only one trim level cheers Steve

TDV8 were all HSE and came with the Brembo 4-pot brake calipers up front. The TDV8 (in the UK) also came with adaptive cruise control (ACC) as standard - this is cruise control with radar to maintain a set distance from the car ahead. TDV8 has the dynamic response system as standard too. This is hydraulic anti roll bars front and rear that give better on road handling along with better off road articulation (the anti roll bar acts as if it is effectively disconnected at low speed). I think TDV8 also came with the "fridge" in the front centre arm rest (it's not a true fridge, it's just a cool box but it works well when the engine is running).

Rear seat entertainment was an optional extra. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

As RRSTDV8 says in his sign off, they are a labour of love. Wonderful car when going well but it is imperative (just like with any RRS) that you take the time to check all the gizmos work properly. Check the off road options and height adjustments all work and work smoothly without any strange noises

As the TDV8 has many options as standard, if they arent working you are paying for something you don’t get (obviously) - and to fix it will cost an arm and a leg. Things like the adaptive cruise, Brembos and dynamic stability control are fantastic when working properly and you’ll forget you’re driving around 2.5 tons. Very Happy

Most important thing with a a tdv8 is service history. The turbos fail somewhere around 100k, lots of other bits and pieces will need replacing over the years. You want one that has been looked after not neglected, or you'll spend the cost of the car again putting it right.

They are fantastic cars, I've done about 15k in mine over the last year or so, it's the perfect mix of sports car, comfortable cruiser, load logger and tow mule. Always puts a smile on my face.

Great all round car, I have had both Turbos replaced cost me just over £3000.00 replacing them my self with the help of a mate also bear in mind anti roll bar seals cam perish and cause oil leaks, can be repaired unless the actual bar starts leaking it will cost about £1300.00 for a new one

The one I am looking at has 128k on it so will of the turbos be on there way out and do they just fail or is there any way to check them also do they all fail or is it just bad luck if it fails

Unless they've been replaced, you should budget to replace them. Pop in to your local independent specialist and get a price for replacing them.

There's no real way to check them, when one of mine failed (for the previous owner), they checked the other one and it was fine...it failed a month later. If they do fail, make sure you stop immediately to prevent other damage to the engine.

The turbos don't automatically fail. They are susceptible to being abused however. If the driver allows the engine to idle for a minute or two (as one really should with any turbo anyway), then they can go on for a long time. If they're driven hard and just turned off whilst still red hot then they don't last. The engine should always be brought up to temperature before working it hard.

The turbo is only cooled by oil flowing to the spindle bearings, there is no other cooling so if they are switched off when red hot, the oil cooks and eventually causes damage to the seals or blocks the oil drain tube. Either way, the seals then fail and oil is dumped in to the air inlet system.

Taking care to idle the turbos and ensuring correct oil servicing is key. However, there is no real way to know if a turbo is going to go wrong until it does.

On the plus side, I would say the TDV8 is the best of the L320 RRSs. It has enough grunt to be useful and much better fuel economy than the Supercharged. The TDV8 makes for relaxed driving because it pulls so well. Towing is ridiculously easy. The earlier seats as in the 2007 are, in my opinion, the more comfortable ones too. The seats in the facelift version (2010-2013) are not as comfortable for me (although still very comfortable they're just not as "favourite armchair" like the older ones). That's a personal thing though.

If you're looking at a 2007, make sure it starts promptly. If it lugs for a few seconds in cold weather it might be a sign that the glow plugs are tired. The glow plugs aren't expensive items but changing them is time consuming. The EGRs might as well be renewed at the same time. (£250 each)

Buy the best TDV8 you can - it must have a full service history and it must be by a decent LR specialist - and ensure you have some "rainy day money" set aside for issues. They are great vehicles but they can bite your wallet without warning.

Edit: As D-9 says, budget for turbo replacement at that age. Check the anti roll bars for leakage too. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Just a non turbo question are the seats all the same and the leather just some pictures I have seen the leather looks like my old disco 3 with little holes in it and then others that are all smooth leather without the holes

Afaik all the tdv8s have solid leather, the supercharged have holes.

You should make sure you have a proper test drive first, ride quality is kinda crappy with 20" wheels. I put up with it, the missus moans occasionally. Also budget for an iid tool diagnostic box, it makes it much easier when it throws one of its random electronic sulks, saves you taking it to the garage just to clear codes.

Did you check out the 60k tdv8 sport in the for sale section?

Just to add my 10 cents worth,, I agree with most of the comments made but my V8 has perforated leather and does not have Brembo brakes either,, but the ones fitted still work very well if maintained properly. I can't comment on the difference between the 2 as I have not driven a RS with brembos. 2010 RRS, TDV8

side steps / flappy paddles
black perforated leather
22" overfinch
heated everything, TV,fridge ...... now with gold calipers and mud flaps !( black mud flaps that is) !!
Many years ago,,,,, 1955 series 1 landie , sometimes wish I had kept it

The facelift changed the brakes and seats as well as the rest of the interior. Pre-2010 were solid leather and Brembo front brakes. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
