United Kingdom 2008 Range Rover Sport TDV8 HSE Zermatt Silver
First Car

Hi all

Just for a bit of fun I thought this might be a good topic. Do you remember your first car? Now I’m sure that some on here are still wet behind the ears and will nominate their current RRS. But for those of us a bit longer in the tooth it might kindle some memories (and perhaps the odd story or two) of bygone times. Or perhaps you’d rather forget.

Anyway, for what it’s worth, here’s my epistle.

First car was a 4 door Ford Popular which I bought in the early 70’s. I took my dad with me so that he could check it over and parted with the princely sum of £35! Three forward gears to the 4 cylinder side valve engine (998cc I think) with no synchro on first gear. It’s piece de resistance was that the wipers were driven by the vacuum from the inlet manifold which was stored in a resovoir under the bonnet. This was fine until you came to a long hill on a rainy day. By the time you got halfway up the hill, obviously using extra throttle, the vacuum had all but gone in the reservoir and so the wipers stopped moving and you couldn’t see where you were going😁

Any other contributions? Robin

United Kingdom 2008 Range Rover Sport TDV8 HSE Tangiers Orange

A Vauxhall Viva HB payed £50 was a none runner due to an engine fire, could of offered £20 which I’m sure they would of accepted but was only a fresh faced 16 year old. Cost me £10 for parts from the local scrap yard to get it running again. Had to strip and clean the carb every 30 miles or so because of rust/muck in the tank.
Passed the test and managed a couple of months before righting it off. The stupidity of youth... 2008 G4 RRSport TDV8 current

The following Sunday I had a call to go see my dads mate - on the way we passed a fire engine - the Censored had tried welding with a tank of fuel Rolling with laughter all I had left was a number plate Big Cry

Datsun Bluebird 1.8 GL Automatic. 3-speed auto box. Not a bad car really. Had some good features for the day such as a panel on the dash that would tell you when a bulb failed e.g. tail light, indicator etc. Had a twin choke Weber down draught carb which would either run well or pass the MoT but not both. I used to set it for the test and then reset it before driving home. Just a single 1/4 turn of an adjuster was all it took. Easy to work on - you could almost stand next to the engine in the bay. Starter motor took all of 10 minutes to remove, for example.

Replaced by a 309 GTi which was an altogether more satisfying drive! 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed
