check auto fliud in gearbox.rrs v8 diesel auto.2007

hi .can the auto gearbox fluid level be checked or topped up on RRS ,Ive looked for a dip stick but haven't found one ,sorry if its a daft question .ray.

There is no dip stick.

Obviously a mechanic can do it (via the level plug) with the engine running.

bottom of transmission.
2 bolts (drain and fill)
unscrew bolt for filling and it should start to leak in small volume (working engine), in case it does not, add ATF until it starts to drain.
I believe temperature should be at some level (not cold not too hot).

If you undo the filler without the engine running, then you will lose a lot of fluid.

Car needs to be level and gearbox oil temperature between 30 and 50 degrees.
With the engine running, Put the gear into reverse and then drive and manual 1,2,3
This fills the galleries as much as possible. Undo the filler and the oil should be filled until the oil dribbles out. Bodsys Brake Bible

and don't add red ATF.

use fluid for ZF6HP boxes

Bodsy - question on this if I may - I want to do a sump change to the metal one and do a basic oil change at the same time (not a full/mega flush). I figured that if you ran the engine while dropping the fluid you would drop a lot more fluid as you have indicated above.

HOWEVER I was not going to do it as I was concerned that at some point the remaining fluid in the torque converter and gearbox would be too low with the engine running and would cause damage. Do you know if there is a time or some other criteria that allows the engine to run with the drain plug out before damage does occur?

I intended to do a second transmission oil drop in about 1000km after the first to maximize the amount of oil changed but getting the maximum oil out without damage would be helpful.

Whatever you do, do NOT run the engine whilst changing the filter/pan.
As soon as the pan is released, the gearbox oil pump will be sucking on air. Definitely not good for it!

It will take 4 changes of oil to get anywhere near to a full flush equivalent. But if you change the oil pan and then fill back up, just run the car and put into command shift 1,2,3. Then stop the engine, drop the oil again and refil.
Then do a single drop of oil at every service.

The D3 boys have been doing this for years and it removes most of the oil.

Step 1 Disconnect oil cooler line at front and run engine for 20seconds or until oil stops coming out. (3.5 litres)
Step 2 Drain sump fluid. (2 litres)
Step 3 refit sump plug (or change filter)
Step 4 refill (which is slightly more difficult)
Step 5 level check.

Not sure I’ve seen many doing that. Id never run the box until no oil comes out.

If you want to change oil easily, drain f rom the gearbox sump, refill with oil. (About 4-5 litres if you’re lucky)
Drive around the car park, drain again and refill.

That will change about 60-75% overall. Bodsys Brake Bible

Obviously its not great, but once in the life of the gearbox should be fine.

The great thing about the above method, is that when the oil goes back it it almost stays perfectly clean.
