Rear parking sensors

There are a whole host of topics on this, with fixes and deviations from the topic and boat loads of info.
I'm selling my RRS and for a while the rear sensors have not been working (i have no front sensors). Not having them working hasn't bothered me. But obviously it will bother the person who intends to buy my car.
When starting the car there is a long beep and the button for PDC flashes. I've stuck the car in reverse and wedged the brake and can hear no audible output from any of the sensors.
Would this imply a loom failure over all 4 sensors being duff?
Is it an easy fix to replace the loom?, rear bumper off etc. Winter is setting in so ideally want to now get it done before the cold comes on.

cheers

Try first taking the rear bumper off and having a good look at the condition of the loom. If there are any obvious breaks solder in a new section.

Here is a link to bumper removal:

There are other linked videos by Powerful on other bits of the parking sensors.

A decent fault code reader would be a great help. It seems to be necessary to clear the fault code before the system will work again - that's what I found with the fronts anyway!

In my case, intermittent fault of the front sensors seems to have been solved (so far!) by just removing the front bumper and cleaning everything up (including all the sensors and connecting plugs) - the loom all looked OK. 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

I think you posted some concern with your parking sensors before and I did paste a post of mine in case it was of any help. See below in case you missed it.

http://www.rrsport.co.uk/forum/topic48459.html

It’s certainly worth getting the bumper off and having a look. As I found that a prior owner had already bodged a repair I concluded that there may be a fault with the routing of the wiring loom that renders them susceptible to damage.

The fact that you can’t hear anything from the sensors suggests a power failure rather than a sensor fault. Check that red wire. Thumbs Up Robin

Just as an FYI, my rear sounder unit failed a couple of months back. This presented with a dash fault saying the front parking sensors weren't working (I'll repeat, it was the REAR sounder that failed), I had no sensors either front or rear until I replaced the sounder unit. So that could well be worth looking into (especially as the sounder is either £12 or £15).

As you're selling the car it doesn't really matter as much, but if it is a parking sensor that's faulty, the cheap after market sensors have a smaller detection range than the originals, so it's worthwhile spending a little extra.

From the manual:

"If a long, high-pitched tone sounds and the switch indicator flashes when PDC is activated, then a fault in the system has been detected - first check that the sensors on the bumpers are not obscured by dirt, ice or snow. If the fault persists after cleaning the sensors, contact your Land Rover Dealer/Authorised Repairer for assistance."

Yours are the same symptoms as mine (except I had front sensors as well - which were not broken).

Sounds to me like you need to get out in that snow Robin

I guess it can pay to regularly check these things.
I find a random biolet piece if wiring going from the main socket and then around the metal frame of the car and then taped onto the yellow wire of the second sensor.
Also found 3 of 4 sensors caked in half a kilo of sand and dirt. Each.

Aha. So it shows that mine is not the only one with a bodge job around the rear sensors.

Looking at the photos I took when I did mine may give you a bit of help in understanding how it should be wired. See my gallery. It looks like the first sensor has brown black and red wires.

Hope you get it sorted Thumbs Up Robin

So, carrying on from previous post. Wiring loom looked to be ok. applied new tape over the violet wire that seemed to circum-navigate the yellow wire to sensor 2. Let the bumper dry and hoovered all the crud from its inside.
Re-inserted the plugs and the wiring. Attached main plug from loom back to the other part.
Car on, R selected. long high pitched beep and continual flashing still.

Does it need the use of an IID Tool to clear the fault before it works again (thinking that's my easiest option - go to local garage and get them to read and clear faults) - would that also for sure tell me what the fault is.

I've read a lot of corroded wiring looms, or an individual faulty sensor.

Would rather pin point the fault that spend the cash to change everything. Especially when i'm looking to sell it.

That maybe the best answer. At least to eliminate what you can for minimal cost. Does it look as if the violet wire has been used to replace the yellow one? If so, I don't thing that would explain the others not working. I'm guessing that the red green yellow and blue wires are the return signal to the parking module (see wiring diagram below) with brown and black providing power and earth. But as you say, there may be a fault recorded which needs to be cleared - although I had no issues with mine. After repairing the red wire it just started working again.

Bluetooth OBD reader bought. Green ticks all the way flthrough on the scan. No fault codes to read or clear.
So whilst that is all good. It’s also a bummer as i still do5 know the issue. So looks to be a new wiring loom.
Ebay for 50 GBP plus postage.

Which OBD reader are you using? If it is generic only then doubt it would read the all or any of the sensor codes.

After two weeks with no sensor problems I suddenly got the erratic constant beeping when selecting reverse (no flashing light on the dash). Plugged in the IID and the instrument panel module had logged a U code 'lost communication with park assist module'. Cleared the codes and now all hunky dory again until the next time I suppose. It seems some codes have to be cleared to get the system working.

Post an update on how you get on with fitting the replacement loom!

In my case guess I'll just have to do some more investigation Crying or Very sad 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

The OBD reader is a bog standard bluetooth module. Cost 40€.
Gave the following diagnostic results:

Still get the long pitched beep and flashing lights.
Will look at a new loom.

And the car must be in a bad mood with me as now the windscreen washer jets on the bonnet don't squirt. Only the head lamps work. So need to dig into that now as well. Should never have told her i was going to trade up.

On a side note, i haven't bought a car from the UK in over 23 years. What's the current format for buying a car in terms of - tyre's have been kicked, breath drawn through teeth and a few tuts. How much haggle is acceptable nowadays?
