2013 Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE Stornoway Grey
Battery charging and PHEv's

I am seriously considering chopping my 2015.5 SDV6 in for an Si4 PHEV with the same spec as my current car bar the 22" wheels. Now here's the question ....... do you think that if the car is left on the charger for the plug in batteries that the batteries for the Petrol engine side will also get trickle charged ...... I don't know if there is a separate engine battery for a PHEV or if the power for the electric motors is also used for engine starting and the stop/start. Am having 2 quotes worked out - Veloctity Blue with Ivory Interior / Dark Ash Veneer, Pano Roof, Privacy, heated steering wheel, auto dimming wing mirrors and deployable tow pack with tow assist for a PHEV HSE Dynamic and a similar SDv6 HSE Dynamic with added 22" wheels, upgraded audio and a couple more options to make prices equal as PHEV is more expensive. Please don't suggest going up to the Autobiography as I don't want 99% of the whistles and bells things that come with an Autobiography and anyway the price is very on silly even for the HSE D! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it
2018 Melting Silver Mini Countryman PHEV - soon to be replaced

Not sure about LR but my Mitsubishi PHEV checks starter battery daily at 2pm and tops it up if required from drive battery or mains charger if connected so I don't need the ctek I used on DS and RRSs Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

On PHEV and hybrids there are normally 2 battery types - small 12v for starting and larger for motors - I understand that you start vehicle using small 12v but once vehicle is on you get a green ready message and everything runs off bigger drive battery even if engine is off - starter battery is smaller than normal because it's not doing as much as normal vehicle Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

Tim I know you leave yours parked long periods and this can be a problem with hybrids

From reading PHEV forum owners recommend using charge button for traction battery enroute to long term parking if low or using save button if full so it doesn't go flat while away - if you leave it at home plugged in it wouldn't be a problem on Mitsubishi but not sure about LR

Hybrids without plug in are more complicated according to my Lexus handbook

Quote:
Charging the hybrid battery (traction battery)

As the gasoline engine charges the hybrid battery (traction battery), the battery does not need to be charged from an outside source. However, if the vehicle is left parked for a long time the hybrid battery (traction battery) will slowly discharge. For this reason, be sure to drive the vehicle at least once every few months for at least 30 minutes or 16 km (10 miles). If the hybrid battery (traction battery) becomes fully discharged and you are unable to start the hybrid system, contact any authorized Lexus dealer or repairer, or
another duly qualified and equipped professional..

Thanks Muddy, that is great but will LR have thought about this? Also the dealers don't seem to know yet if the price includes a home charger or not or if the car could be left plugged in for say 3 months at a stretch without frying the battery...........
Land Rover seems to doing the "Yea we have launched a PHEV, but please don't ask us technical questions because we haven't a clue what you are talking about!" Thing. I announced the intention to family and the reaction is "why aren't you buying an EV as the great white witch of the North wants to ban all fossil fuelled cars in Scotland by 2020" shows the power of the Daily Mail/Scottish Daily Snail (my folks never miss an issue and believe every word in it is correct and genuine...... they can be forgiven as they are in their 90's but the papers cannot be forgiven) that such rubbish is printed and the whole country believes them, she wants to ban all DIESEL powered cars from town centres by 2020......... 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

AFAIK every manufacturer supplies a 13amp 3 pin travel charger free with vehicle but these are slow - 5 hours on Mitsubishi Sad

The government then offers a grant towards a dedicated faster home unit - 3.5 hours for Mitsubishi - so this is then free with Mitsubishi for std install Cool

As you'd expect cowboy outfits are ripping off the government grants and charging extra for upgrading customers existing circuits Evil or Very Mad

I didn't have to go through this because a friend had a prewired spare unit and gave it me - I then got my electrician to connect it up for me - he advised me the unit had been wired incorrectly by the government grant paid electrician and had to redo it Shocked Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

I do fancy a total EV like the Tesla but the range and charging away from home are concerns - I've been up to Scotland twice last month visiting family and wouldn't trust range - then I'd need to recharge which would be an issue

At moment PHEV and Hybrid are best option imho until the infrastructure is sorted and they're not on the government ban radar although VED is another matter - the post April Lexus costs me nearly as much as RRSs used to Big Cry Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

I suppose the general recommendation for Li-ion batteries such as camera or drone batteries also applies to the car Li-ion batteries, which is not to fully charge them when storing for weeks or months, and 50% generally the recommended level for storage and charge to full when ready to use.

So long as the starter battery is ok, surely the rest is less of an issue. Isn't the idea that the ICE charges the big battery as you go along anyway? 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

The Mitsubishi PHEV always keeps 30% of traction battery in reserve so shouldn't be an issue and the most efficient method to recharge is mains

A normal hybrid can only be recharged by ICE and has smaller traction battery hence the recommended 2 monthly start/drive in Lexus handbook

From what I have learned if you flatten traction battery on hybrid and leave stood for extended period the computer will not allow vehicle start to protect batteries so it's a dealer trip on flatbed for them to recharge traction battery with specialist equipment

Again I've no idea how LR systems work but expect it will be same as manufacturers generally copy or buy sub manufacturers Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW
