Not on the early ones i can leave mine in park and the hand brake does not come on but if i put it on a can drive away and it does release without pressing the button but on my manual disco 3 it came on as soon as i turned off the key

It is true that lack of use will likely give problems with electronic hand brakes, use it or lose it as the saying goes. My 2009 3.6 doesn't apply the brake when in Park so maybe this is a later mod?
If the car has been parked up for months without use of the brake then this is contributing to your problem, the issue is, whilst regular use from now on may cure the problem, you don't know if in the meantime, the brake could seize on or damage the EPB module.
The best thing to do is have a service done asap on the brake after which, use it regularly. Until you get the service done, don't use it because there's a chance it may seize on at THE most inconvenient time.
I leave mine off when parked on my flat level drive, but regularly use it when driving

They are good fbh's but petrol's to warm up a lot quicker than diesel's

Just to backup most of the other replies,, my handbrake started squealing slightly a couple of days before we went on holiday,,, on the morning we were leaving it sized good style,, even the emergency release wouldn't work. Had to get it lifted to my indie while we were away. Just cost me for new module, discs, pads and shoes etc as they couldn't get the discs off even after cutting the cables. I was told I should make a point of taking the discs off at each service and have everything cleaned up as the build up of brake dust etc causes no end of troube 2010 RRS, TDV8

I have got into the habit of putting the EPB on whilst in neutral, then releasing the footbrake to ensure the car is held by the EPB, then selecting Park.
First it ensures that there is no strain on the gearbox, and second I'm using the EPB regularly so hopefully avoiding risk of seizing.
The alternative could be (1) an expensive gearbox repair to find a sheared off pin that's rattling around inside, and (2) not having to find the cost of repairing whatever the 2.5 tons of RRS uses to stop if the pin fails and the EPB wasn't used. Robin

Well,,, to be honest I think no matter which way you apply the handbrake or not use it some of the time unless you remove the discs annually and physically clean, lubricate and adjust correctly it will eventually sh*t it's pants!! 2010 RRS, TDV8

Just done it again this morning when I got to work. Need to get searching and find a decent garage local to me and get it sorted. Steve.

Quicker the better you get them adjusted and cleaned the cheaper it will be in the long run
