True TDV8HST, however during my expierence JLR took an oil monster of my car, before they authorized the dealer to swap the engine. The dealership here in Lagos uses 5W40 917A Castrol oil and sometimes even 20W50 GTX! I always insisted on the right specs 5W30. You do not want to become a victim of kicking the ball between dealership and JLR. Certainly will keep updated, got a call today from the European operations team, they say that the transporter has provisionally set the car to be with my local dealer by 31st of this month, but perhaps few days earlier.

Just an update, mine has landed in the UK, so should arrive at the local dealer next week to find out the damage.

My year old 18000 mile RRS engine gave up whilst on holiday in Cornwall. Crankshaft bearing went and the whole bottom end seized solid! Land Rover were not keen to tell me what had gone wrong, but I persisted until I got an answer. Bill was over £17,000 and the car will be gone before the end of its warranty!!! |

what was the LR answer, while mine has not seized, German technician said its most probably Crankshaft or its bearings that has failed. |

udash, it will interesting to get confirmation whether it's the cranshaft, because everyone at LR claims that this problem has been rectified from My12 onwards when they took over the production from Ford.

Get some of the engine oil if you can and have it checked for diesel dilution and other evidence of poor lubrication.

Anything to do with this, as when not done reports of engine failure?

The SCN is quite blunt, "Continued vehicle operation with high oil dilution WILL result in engine failure." And this is an "engine failure" if ever there was one. Obviously no-one can say that it was the cause in this unfortunate case and probably only the company will ever get to know precisely why this particular crankshaft failed. But if the car is in the affected group (which it seems to be) surely poor lubrication needs to be "eliminated from enquires", as George Gently might put it. |

Diluted lubrication is bad news all round. Cranks will fracture (particularly at rear main) if piston(s) pick-up and partially seize while other cylinders are still producing power.
