Hi all,

Im new to RRS world, I have a 2006 HSE 2.7tdv6.

Only thing is, I am a little disapoitned with its performance, I have had it chipped to 225bhp which has helped but even still its not that great!

Question has anyone ever done an engine transplant and put in a 3.6 tdv8 engine or a 3.0tdv6?

Or is it just not possible, or not worth doing?

Are there any other upgrades worth doing if not?

Bigger turbo maybe?

Any input gratefully received.

Anthony, welcome to the fourms.
You will find it quite difficult if your existing car doesn't have Dynamic Response also IIRC you might need a new gearbox to handle the increased torque of the TDv8 and the bigger brakes that the TDv8 comes with - why not just buy a used TDV8 original car? I'm sure one of the many TDV8 owners on the forum will give better advice - it is 7 years since I last owned an RRS TDv8, I had a TDv8 FFRR Vogue after the RRS and it was not as nice a car to drive as it didn't have the Dynamic Response or the Brembo brakes the RRS had! 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

I'm only doing it as the 3.6 was never an option in the D3. If I wanted a 3.6 Sport, I'd sell the 2.7 and replace it with a 3.6, MUCH easier and likely much cheaper too

Changing the RRS over to the TDV8 would be a fair old job, especially if you're paying someone else to do it.

You'd need all of the engine ancillaries with the engine as a number of them are different between 2.7 and 3.6.

You'd need a new cooling pack (radiator, fuel cooler, intercooler) as they are different. The TDV8 also has an additional radiator in the right hand lower corner fed by an opening in the lower bumper valance. So you'd need both of those.

The gear box is different. The gearbox cooling is different. The rear half shafts are different on the 3.6 and the 2.7 (unless you have the locking rear diff on the 2.7 - this uses the same half shafts as the 3.6).

The engine bay wiring loom is different. The engine ECU might be different.

The exhaust is different, as are the exhaust manifolds (which are about £500 new each if need to buy them separately from the engine!). Hopefully the engine comes with the turbos or that's another £3k to add.

Assuming you have Dynamic Response on your 2.7 then you'd just need the suspension alignment reset for the TDV8 (it uses slightly different settings to the 2.7). If you don't have Dynamic Response on the 2.7 then you'll need to either add it to the chassis or else figure out some way of doing away with the DR pump on the engine. A dummy idler might work? The suspension module uses a different map on the 3.6 to the 2.7 so you might need a new suspension module too although it might be possible to swap tunes in the module (no idea on that). Whether this works with/without the DR system I don't know.

That's just for starters.

Other than that, easy job really. Not as easy as selling your 2.7 and buying a 3.6 instead, of course. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Big difference between chipped and a remap I ran a 2.7 with a BAS remap, just what the car needed. Do a search on here and the Disco 3 forum, Bell remap  In Spain - 2018 F Pace - Frightened away from the Sports due to crank failures

The 2.7 benefits from a new, larger intercooler I believe. There is a thread on Disco3 regarding the swap. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

I am new to the Forum and I will soon start a new treat.
But I am interested to know how this build went.
I bought a 2.7TDV6 RRS but thinking for a bigger step.
Swap in a 4.4SC V8 i saw that the transmission is the same.
It's only to get the Complete V8 in with all ancciliaries and wiring and ecu will the plugs connection with the body work etc

again.

easier to buy one than try and swap diesel>petrol

If you engine was dead it maybe worth while

Thanks for your advice, I do like the idea of doing something special.
I believe anything is possible if you put enough effort in it.
As Range Rover Sport is new to me and I do have quite some experience with BMW where it's easy to swap engines the wiring on a different engine uses similar plugs if you stay in the same generation

The Supercharged has a different gearbox to the 2.7 diesel. It has additional planet gears to handle the power. I think it has different gearing too. Certainly the front and rear diffs are different. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

At least the Belhousing shape looks similar.
If I opt for the 4.4 looking at the torque of a TD engine at 400plus NM the Transmission should comfortably handle the 4.4 ZF HP26 Transmission is attached to the 4.5 V8 in the BMW 7 series

At the next stage I might swap the rear diff as I hardly go Off-road I don't really use the front axle.

Can someone tell me how the transmission is controlled is that done separately from the Engine ECU or is the Engine ecu responsible for the control if the gearbox

This sounds like a disaster in the making...
