Only time I've used them on my current sport is accidentally when turning steering wheel.

I had a E46 M3 with paddles and used them permanently and thought I would use them in the Sport but other than a couple of times when I first got the car I've never used them since and think they are a bit pointless and n the Range Rover! 2017 SVR. SVO Scafell grey Ebony interior

Strange, I generally use my Paddles much of the time, also with box in Sports mode, except on motorways, as once in 8th gear no need to use them just hit cruise and relax instead. John

I think it's down to how quiet the sport is and being diesel it runs out of revs at about 4K rpm so catches me out as I find you need to watch the rev counter to change at the right time. With the M3 you could hear when you needed to change plus revving to 8k rpm you never ran out of revs before you pulled the up paddle.

I use mine! Great for selecting a gear for when you want to overtake instead of waiting for kickdown or the box to sort itself out.

I think people don't use them because, especially with the 306bhp SDV6, the torque is so good that they aren't really necessary and they are happy not to drive their Sport as a sports car. Up to March last year I used to use paddles and S mode on road a lot but after the Gearbox ECU software remap that was a TSB was done at the service I have only ever used the paddles in "Command shift" (S+Low ratio) off-roading. Like you I also prefer to use engine braking in 1st offroad rather than HDC I also don't like the way the gearbox tends to shift up a gear or two when driven in Auto mode offroad on a downslope thus reducing the engine-braking effect. I do use HDC on wet grass on steep downslope runs and rockcrawling. HDC still eats pads and shoes if you leave it on all the time offroad. At least with LR's TR systems you have the option to have them on or off, although with Auto TR it is becoming harder to drive offroad "the old fashioned way". In my car I have to leave it in the "on road/ normal" setting but in low box to use the car as I drive my non-electronics equipped Defender, any other way either requires a TR program to be selected or AutoTR2 (the selector in the pressed down position which is the default in L494) and it is quite unnerving to get the warning "System Optimising" on the screen while the computer decides which program it is going to set when you are in a tricky situtation. I would prefer not to know the system was optimising and just assume that it is operating seamlessly ( which it does anyway). "System Optimising" tends to make you think that the system is trying out various modes before deciding the best setting - that sort of "in limbo" setting where you think no programmes are selected! I know that it retains the pre-optimising setting engaged but I have had quite experienced offroad drivers in the car who have been flummoxed by the warning and they cannot understand a computer that can "multi-task" the settings. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

I tend to use the paddles quite a bit, especially when the car holds the gear too long for my liking. Maybe this is why my MPG is quite a lot better than most people have stated they get on here. On motorways there is no real need but in town driving and especially first thing in the morning I tend to use them. When you want the car to be a bit lively, sport mode and dynamic then I use the paddles all the time just to give it the odd blast |
