how to remove butterfly valve?

EGR blanking seems to be more of a pita than the simple process it should be.

Perhaps it's me? Shocked

I cannot seem to remove the butterfy valve. The instructions I've read are to prise the shaft out (I've already removed the actuator) however it doesn't seme to budge and I'm afraid to force it anymore incase it cracks the housing.

Can anyone who has done this please give some advice? I've searched and read guides here and on Disco3 but aside from prising it out from the side there is not much elaboration?

thanks in advance!

I did it on my RRS. It was very tight on the shaft and wouldn't budge at first. I sprayed penetrating oil on it and applied quite a force and it came free. Like you I was worried about breaking something but it all went well in the end. Thumbs Up

cheers Phillh

Did you put grips on the end to pull the shaft out or lever it with a screwdriver? I've heard both. I'll try the grips tomorrow as levering it feels like it will break the casing.

I used a large flat bladed screwdriver and placed a flat chisel under it when levering the butterfly off to reduce chances of damaging the unit itself.

You reply makes me question if I'm understanding this wrong... Did you lever the actual butterfly off of the spindle in situ? Or did you lever the spindle end out of the casing and then remove the butterfly?

cheers for sharing your method

I levered the butterfly off the spindle. I just had a look at mine (I took it off 8 months ago and kept it in case I need to refit it for an mot or something) and there are 2 sleeves on the butterfly with a gap in the middle. If the screwdriver doesn't work, try levering the inner edge of the sleeve against the end of the shaft with a pair of pliars or grips. It will come off Thumbs Up

Thumbs Up So you can pull the butterfly off the spindle without pulling the spindle out of the housing?

Thanks Bodsy. I thought so, I must have misunderstood Phillh's post. I guess I'll try some grips on the spindle end to pull it out as levering it isn't budging
