Thanks for that. So are they powered (i.e. Electric?) once the engine is switched off (for cooling) or are they just winding down?
And is that a good thing? Or should I be trying to mitigate the length of time they whine? I already (normally) sit with the engine running for about a half a minute to a minute after a run even if I've not been aggressive on the throttle during the run.

IIRC they will run on for a short spell to cool enough to prevent the oil frying onto the bearings however it is very good practice with a turbo engine not to come to a halt after a run and just switch off (and it doesn't matter if it is a petrol or diesel) for the longevity of the turbo bearings - the thing gets red hot in operation so some mechanical symphathy is necessary. The whine could also be the cooling fan for the engine running on too, but I know the noise that you mean but while it was very noticable on my previous RRS's and the FFRR's that I have run I never noticed it on either of the Evoques or the L494. Some turbos are water cooled and they make the same noise as the water still has to be circulated to disperse the heat. Not sure if it might not also be the intercooler also circulating cooling water through the system to also dissipate heat. And on some engines it can be the HP fuel pump still running........... 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

Yes, never turn off the engine straight away after a hard drive, the spooling is still pumping oil in the turbos to ensure they are cooled and not .

Those turbos spin at a very high rate and get very hot Just bought a RRS 06 MY HSE TDV6 136,000 miles, to be a second car to my bland, boring Mitsubishi Outlander 68 plate 2.0 petrol 4

I've not noticed before but there's also a clicking sound immediately after shut down. It sounds like its supposed to be there but it would be interesting to know what it is. Robin

The clicking noise in the turbo VVT units opening the closing as a self test or to stop them sticking (and helps with oiling!)

My TDV6 also has the high pitch wine. Maybe the EGR C throttle body doing similar movements.
I wouldn't worry.

always allow the turbo to cool down after a drive, especially a spirited one.

What I normally do (when driving on the highway), is to slow down during the last km to allow the turbo to cool down while there's still air flowing through, and then idle until the EGT falls below !60C. Usually happens by the time I stop, gather wallet, keys, etc.,

of course, this is in my Puma, where I have a madman fitted, not sure if that's possible on the RRS? --
