Had a neighbor come round at my parents place when he saw the car. His car was stolen off the drive at 3am this morning, all caught on camera but it doesn't look like they cared.

Wrap the key in aluminium foil until you can sort out a shielded pouch. |

This is a massive problem with all keyless entry vehicles. Something the car manufacturers seem to be ignoring and are hoping will go away. Your remote key emits a very small signal all the time, even when it is in your home. The toerags can buy a signal booster, which boosts the signal coming off your key fob if they are within something like 50 yards of your house, they then transfer this info onto a laptop or handheld device, which then allows them to reprogramme another key, and that is all they need, to then take off in any vehicle they wish. Surprisingly Thatcham (the industries approved security body) hasn't taken this type of theft into account, when classing all vehicles security.

No, but the pouch stops them copying the signal being sent by your keys as the pouch shields the signal. As you say though, any vehicle anywhere in the world with all the technology fitted to it can be taken if they just lift it up and put it on a low loader. At least the newer Land Rover's Remote informs you where your car is at any one time, which for Land Rover is quite helpful, for a change |

I never lock mine with the fob.you could always fit a tracker that needs a separate fob so if they get the keys within 5 minutes of them driving off tracker calls you to see if the car as been stolen or if you've forgot your fob.

Apparently not. The pouch has also failed with a few cars going missing. |

Except you still have to take the key out the pouch to unlock/lock it so the signal is then emitted! So if it can be signal boosted that far then they could be in a parking space next door to you or even the car next to you in the petrol station and they then have what they need! 2003 BMW M5 - 5 Litres of V8 Optimax Slurping Goodness in Carbon Black 2013 SDV6 HSE Black Edition- Orkney Grey with Ebony & Ivory. The signal is a rolling code of random numbers, simply capturing the signal does nothing because you cannot guess the next code from the current one. If this is broken then Thatcham should have pulled the certificate for the system. |
