You could put the plate on retention and transfer it to your next car - if the plate has a year letter or is of the current style then you have to watch that the plate isn't more recent than the car you are putting it on, i.e. You mustn't make the car look younger than it really is. If you remove the plate for retention/ sale then DVLA will issue a new age related standard plate for the S/C unless it was on a standard plate before you put you private one on, in which case the number will revert to that.
