2013 Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE Santorini Black

Saw the Velar today, on display in Piccadilly Gardens Manchester. Hi-spec model - R-Dynamic, 22s, P380, Grey (Corris?) with the navy blue leather.

It's a smart looking car and I'm sure they will sell bucket loads of 'em. And I hope they do, whilst Tata owned, they support plenty of UK jobs (I live near to their Wolves engine plant, so their investment feels very tangible).

But - and don't trash me - it wouldn't replace my RRS. It does look like a very upmarket estate car (it was in ride height, not access height); appears very long and low (whatever the actual measurements say) and didn't feel as commanding from the driver's seat. Some very nice design touches - the alloys, the LED lights, pop out handles, twin touch screens.... But I'd say there is also some pretty cheap plastic going on down around knee level.

So, I'm likely heading towards a new RRS STDV8 AB. But, to reiterate, the Velar is a very good looking car and I'm sure those that order them will become proud owners with excellent residual values!

This is what i was worried about, the more i look at it the more estate car it looks plus if it lost the high driving position that makes RRs special it would be a no from me . SVR 2018 in Santorini Black.

Nice one Cooperman glad you liked the majority of what you saw. That is the same car they had in Solihull on their Velar open days.

I'd hold fire in ordering a new RRS as there are going to be some considerable changes on the MY18.

I tried to draw the chap from JLR on MY18 for the RRS, but he was having none of it Rolling Eyes Feels like a couple of people around these parts have some inside knowledge but can't spill the beans!! I'm not too fussed about dual screens and pop-out handles, but adaptive LED headlights and a refresh of alloy designs would be welcome to the RRS ... oh, and another 50bhp on the V8 diesel Laughing

I wish I could use the infotainment system and other features a bit more but couldn't unfortunately because a) the Velar wasn't on the agenda of the event I attended and b) the battery died Rolling Eyes

I didn't get the estate car feeling in Velar but have to agree on the seating position - definitely better in RRS. RRS MY18 updates may be nice but it will be fundamentally the same car. MY16 and MY17 updates didn't have much of an impact on older cars' residuals. Given that the L405 FFRR that came out a year before L494 RRS still has some time before it gets replaced, there shouldn't be a new RRS for quite some time, which is when the RRS will take a big depreciation hit. Just my opinion. Current: Volvo XC90 T8 Inscription Pro PHEV with some optionals on top
Gone: MY16 RRS2 3.0 SDV6 Autobiography Dynamic, Carpathian Grey & Santorini Black Sliding Pano/Ebony & Ivory 2 Tone
Gone: MY13 RRS 3.0 SDV6 HSE Black Edition, Orkney Grey/Ivory
Gone: MY09 RRS 2.7 TDV6 HSE, Santorini Black/Almond

Very Happy loving the jacked up estate comments. Agree it does look pretty long and weird when on a lower suspension setting but this had a lot to do with the wheel size too. Cars riding on 22"s and at normal ride height are far from looking like a jacked up estate.

Anyway if the Velar is a jacked up estate what does that make the Evoque - a hatchback? Laughing

The Velar is 0.5 seconds quicker than a RRS 3.0d to 60 and I guess a lower ride height in addition to the weight savings have something to do with it - coefficient and drag factor or whatever it's called?

That one, VA66XTJ is registered as a 3 litre, so will it be a SVR'd 3 litre Supercharged Question

Hmm makes sense as to not bite in to RRS SVR sales? Wonder what the power output would be!

The V6 makes up to 400bhp in the F-type. 400bhp in the Velar wouldn't be an unreasonable SVR. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

I think they may push this to circa 450BHP - lets wait and see but should be pretty rapid!

I'd be surprised if they stick the RRS's SVR V8 lump in it. The RRS would be fairly pointless then as the Velar is significantly lighter and likely more nimble as it's a more road-oriented vehicle.

Then again, this is LR so who knows. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed
