Rr sport 2.7 td6 oil filter fitting

I did a service on my rr sport td6, the other day, and I fitted the filter into the cap before refitting. I have learned now that this is wrong , and I should have fitted the filter to the housing rather then the cap. This is so that the nipple on the filter slots into the oil cooler housing properly. What I would like to know is can I remove the filter and refit it properly without draining the sump? I'm not driving the vehicle until I refit it. Thanks

Yes, you can. However, for the cost of a new filter, I'd be replacing it, and a new seal too. Better safe than sorry, it's not a cheap engine to repair/replace...

I've never had a problem, They're the same as the BMW 123d filter and housing and if you start screwing the cap by hand you can feel the pip drop in and then it holds the filter still
