Which fuel do you use

Hi all, was just wondering which brand fuel people use ? Preferably in a supercharged but interested to know in either ? Is there any evidence of one being better than the other? I currently use shell V power and always have !

There are only a given number of refineries in the UK, ALL fuel suppliers get from the refinery nearest to them and the base fuel is all the same grade. Then suppliers allegedly add their own super potions - but all must meet the government minimum which is also what manufacturers build to.

Of course there is the placebo effect when you spend extra on super douper fuel, but I work with petro-chemical engineers who don't waste money on expensive fuels. I go with their expertise...

Many people misinterpret the higher octane values as giving extra power - total crap unless you have a high compression engine which can use the extra knock retarders.

Just an opinion...

I have run standard octane fuel from either shell, bp or texaco for the life of my car, and it gets a good airing regularly, just to see, a couple of fills ago I let the tank run very low, filled with V power, run the tank very low again and filled with v power a second fill..

conclusion is, it is no faster, it uses just as much fuel ( a lot ) and I cannot tell any difference at all so next time I will save the £9 extra per tank,

if I then think the engine is running rough I will let you know. won't be long! 5.0 Ltr Superchrged RRS2, Chile Red, Sideways out of junctions!

In the sport I run diesel, haven't noticed any difference between the expensive vpower diesel and the cheap stuff from Sainsbury's, so it gets whatever is cheapest.

In the other cars, it varies depending on what they are mapped for, the turbo ones all run like a bag of nails on regular because they are mapped for super and the ECUs massively retard the timing for regular. My last Audi (v6 twin turbo) would misfire horribly on Morrisons regular, but run fine on vpower and other high octane. The mustang runs just fine on regular and the landy gets anything that burns Smile

Cheers guys ! Like I say, I've never really been bothered ! I've just chose to always use vpower? Got nothing to do with going faster, just believed it would be better for my engine ! Was never keen to use supermarket fuel due to the horror story's I've heard ?

The advantage of vpower petrol (and other varients of 'super'/'high test') is they have higher octane than regular (98/99/102 vs 95) this means you can run more ignition advance without detonation ('pinking'), more advance means better fuel economy and more power, within limits. Modern ignition systems detect detonation and retard the timing to prevent it, but as a side effect you can loose a lot of power if you run on regular fuel.

Ive not had too many bad experiences with supermarket petrol, had the odd bad batch, and sometimes their super isn't super (its either the wrong fuel or been sat for so long it has degraded back to regular fuel).

If there is a sticker in a car saying 'use 98 octane or higher fuel' then its worth listening too, sure it might be a few more pounds each tank, but when a new engine is £5-10k, you would have to do a lot of miles to pay for a bent rod or holed piston. Also if a car has been remapped for more power and is mapped for higher octane, then be very careful using lower octane fuel as sometimes the manufacturer's safeguards are disabled when remapping.

With regards to vpower diesel, I personally cant tell the difference in my sport, so I'll leave that to someone who knows about diesels to comment Smile
