Currently looking at a 2nd hand 2015 HSE or HSE Dynamic 3.0 SDV6. I would be interested to know from your experience of the fuel range you can obtain from a full tank?

From looking at Autotrader, a 2015 '15 plate 3.0 SDV6 (306bhp) has a 80 litre fuel tank, whilst the same engine in a 2015 '65 has a 89 litre fuel tank! Not sure which is correct.

I drive 95% on the motorway, and tend to hold 70mph on cruise control (so about 67 to 68 mph actually). Not in a rush and not old either! When I need to be in the office, it's 100 miles each way on the M4, light-ish traffic. Ideally, I'm looking for +600 miles from a full tank - to avoid the need to refuel more than once during the week; as it's 1,000 miles for 5 days in the office... (currently do this in a '16 Subaru Outback - want something BIG, so a RRS could be it).

Not worried about the cost of fuel; the fuel range I can expect is key. Some man maths at 35 mpg with an 80 litre tank is 612 miles (35mpg x 17.5 gallon fuel tank). Do you see over 650 miles on this sort of very steady run?

I certainly don't drive for economy and have seen 520miles from a tank on a decent run, so with your usage and driving style 600 is a possibility.

But it doesn't take much to knock down the mpg - cold starts, short journeys, urban use etc. will see the mpg plummet.

I guess you might see close to 600 miles if you drive gently. My trip computer generally shows a range of around 500-550 miles after I fill up and again according to my trip computer I'm averaging about 33-34mpg with a mix of motorway, urban and rural driving but I certainly dont drive specifically to save fuel

After 60k miles in a '63 plate HSE – virtually no urban but quite a lot of short/off-road journeys and a fair bit faster than you on long journeys – I've never managed more than 500 miles on a tank or achieved a real 30mpg (which shows as 34mpg on the computer). I generally wait till single-figure range showing to fill up but have never got more than 75 litres into the tank (supposedly 80 litres) and that after sitting on 0 range for too long. Over whole life a tank averages 440 miles from 70 litres.

I think you'd be optimistic to think your driving style would get you to 600, especially on the older, smaller tank but you'd have fun trying...

I'd agree, based on my short experience. The trip mpg and consequently the trip range are far away from real world figures. (20% usually). Merc C220 estate Sport AMG

After 15k miles in my2016 SDV6 (306HP) I regularly see 500 miles on a tank when on long trips, but as others have said short runs or hard acceleration will hit the MPG hard.

Thanks All for the feedback. Provides me with some clarity for a potential purchase. More concerned about having to refuel twice in the weekdays - yet not a deal breaker.

Was there a MY where the tank went 'larger'?

OK, I wouldn't be so confident. Not sure how many people have MY17 on this post, but I've never seen more than an indicated 463 miles. AND... the absolute crux of the matter is that the fuel tank is NOT 86 Litres as advertised. The maximum the tank will take is 73 .5 litres of fuel even when its got 2 miles indicated. Land Rover are looking into this for me, but the technicians agree that it simply can't be the size they claim. We tried 2 other MY17 cars and I borrowed one and drove it 500 miles and did a trip driving like miss daisy and somehow got 42mpg indicated. Guess what? Only 463 miles range showed up and 72 litres went in. They tell me half a gallon, so only 2.5 litres or so left in tank at zero miles. So its a 75 litres tank. Take into account that all LR cars show 15-20% incorrect MPG figures and the fact is that the real world MPG of this car 306bhp SDV6 engine is about 25mpg. Maybe you could scrape 30mpg.

MY 16, yes, did the tank change for 17? I have seen range north of 500 frequently, and have put more than 80 litres into it more than once. 83 was my max. MY2016 HSE D SDV6 - gone due to fuel dilution problems.

wilf - it must have as trust me.. it's impossible to get more than 73 litres in the car. I've tried 2 others as well (demo cars) and it's just same. They said - maybe its the adblue ? I was like.. that's a different tank. Then they said the baffle that's now standard.. etc... that's not gonna take up 10 litres. Its a joke to be honest and they still advertise a 768 miles range based on the fantasy land combined figure. I actually think the MY17 is worse fuel economy than the MY14/15 cars with 292bhp that were meant to be less efficient. My old mans car we got a range of 620 miles the other day and also put in 84 litres..

To me its clear they have changed the tank to a 75 litres one and in this case you'll never get more than 460 miles range. A shame. Its not the most important part of ownership, but it was quite high up on my list of must haves.

Mine has AdBlue so its not that.

I wonder if this was a mod to stop the "tank slap" many complained about?

This might be a fairy story but I was told by a dealership that the fuel tank size was reduced because of the Ad-Blue additive but not for any other reason than had they slapped a 10ltr tank into the car and left the fuel tank the same size then the vehicle weight would have increased which would mean retesting for emission etc etc............. so the fuel tank size was reduced to keep the vehicle weight the same. I cannot see how 10kg or so would make a difference but apparrantly it does.
Also don't forget that RRS fuel tank is a saddle tank with 2 "chambers" each with a fuel pump in it but so designed that each pump will remain submerged / not draw air if you run the tank to "empty" so the capacity is the total of the tank but it should always have 10litres left in it so the pumps are submerged - again this was told to me by a dealer's service tech so i don't know if it is true or not. Bear in mind that there has to be a significant quantity of fuel left so that the car can operate at scarey angles off road and not draw air into the pumps when the fuel level is low too. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

To me this is a pretty serious situation.

It clearly states in the brochure, the SDV6 has 86 usable litres. I considered this carefully when deciding on purchasing my RRS. My last land cruiser had 138l and the Touareg had 100l, so I think even 86 is lacking (in fact it is sedan fuel tank size territory).

If what you guys are saying is true, and it is more like 76, I will be very disappointed. I take delivery of mine (at last) at the end of this week, so I look forward to testing this capacity out and I will be taking it up with LR if it is not as per their literature. 2017 MY17 SDV6 SE

I can't believe the AdBlue rationale - as I said mine has that and the larger fuel tank. But it is a MY16 car.

I love my SVD8 105 litre tank, no add blue easy 600 mile range when travelling and good performance. Get the SVD8 and all will be good. M16 SVD8 ,4.4 HSE with a few extras, Sold R50 , Wife SQ5 , BMW R1200GSW.
