Hit a problem.

Following the steps to the brake changing guide, and iv hit a problem.

1) the EPB wont go into workshop mode, ( I have followed the guide) Icontinued to change the discs with the epb in the open position.

2) Does the car have to be in park or neutral? In park the real wheel only moves a few inches to line up inspection holes, im guessing while in park it applies a transimion brake, locking the diffs? So am i right in thinking this job is carried out while the keys are in the ignition? (As you cant remove it while its in N).

3) Do both rear road wheels have to be off the ground?


Car is a 2006 rrs 4.2 '06 RRS Supercharged Cairns Blue

Update, so i just put in to N and manually turned road wheel.

And all is fun, quick job apart from chamging that blody wear sensor hidding at the back grrrr

So strated up and parking brake fault appeared, turned ignition off and on and it went out... so all seems fine however nit sure why it would have came on and then went out!? '06 RRS Supercharged Cairns Blue

Neutral with key in to be able to spin the wheels, to line up the handbrake shoe adjuster.
It is only my opinion but setting EPB into service mode is only necessary if changing hand brake shoes.

Obviously make sure no one goes near the hand brake switch in the car while you work on it as you have the key in



I would lift both rears onto axle stands if you don't have access to a lift

Set in off road height

Set on axle stands

Wheels off

Remove caliper

Back off the shoe adjuster, pull the disc, fit new disc, adjust up the shoes, make sure discs spin freely.

Refit caliper

Do other side

Refit wheels

Lower to ground

Pump brake pedal if you pushed the pads in before attempting to drive (unlike a friend who recently put his Merc through his garage back wall) 😳

Thanks buddy but i have already done it.. its an easy job, the actual removing of the dics and pads etc

Was just the main three questions that made me think. My trolley jack wouldnt bring the car in high enough to have both wheels off the ground even in off road height '06 RRS Supercharged Cairns Blue

One thing i did do was to adjust the small hex key tention bolt in the hub, was this needed if keeping the same shoes? '06 RRS Supercharged Cairns Blue

Yep adjusted them fine, not had a chance to do a proper road test yet. Will do it when i di the bedding in procedure '06 RRS Supercharged Cairns Blue

I dint bother bedding in as I didn't fit new shoes

I don't think I could get mine into service mode either.

But removed the big fuse.


for those that do a lot of work on their cars, and with the battery out, I had enough of pulling the gear surround up and did this mod.

You can take it out of park with battery disconnected or key out

Drilled a hole which allows the shift lock to be released without the battery connected or putting the ignition on and pressing the brake.

Older cars used to have this.
