United Kingdom 2007 Range Rover Sport TDV8 HSE Santorini Black
previous owner smoked and need to get rid of the smell

Hello,
My bro in law is buying a 2010 plate RR sport, its a well specced Autobiography and seems like a decent price, everything checks out for him .....except the previous owner smoked quite a bit and the smell is in the car.

I told him that if he washes everything that is washable, then the only places left will be the carpets and roof lining but Im not sure how he can deal with this side of things and as he has young kids, i dont think it's ideal, especially when the sun comes out and the car gets hotter inside. From my previous experience, I dont feel that it's easy to get rid of but has anybody here ever used a really trusted method of dealing with this.

A lot on here might say it's no big deal but for me it would be a deal breaker as i just wouldnt like it.

Any opinions appreciated,

Thanks

I had a car where the previous owner smoked, cleaned everything many time but the smell was just still there and I regretted the purchase.....

after about 6 months the smell was almost gone... then the summer came and the car heated inside and sweated an awful nicotine stench. Banging Head

I never bought a smokers car again..

maybe I imagined it but I thought that there was a thing called a "bomb" or something like that, that you set off inside the car with all the doors etc closed and it neutralised the nicotine but I may have been dreaming Shocked

edit:
Maybe this is the thing in the link above: clobberizer, sounds similar?

probably worth having a word with a good car detailer/valet. My neighbour over the road used to do car cleaning and he had a deep clean mist/smoke that you left off in the car with the air cycle on and deep cleans all the vents etc. Not sure how much he used to charge but got's to be worth every penny to get rid of the smoke smell Wink

I would walk away. My Uncle is a trader / dealer and he just won't buy smoker cars, any relief from smell is temporary according to him. Gone - 2008 Stornoway Grey RRS 2.7 TDV6

Hi,
the screen wash offer posted on D3 has a 30% off code for europarts and noticed they have a AirCon decontamination spray, suspect same sort of idea as ^ you set it off inside the car with aircon off and recycle on, but it is less than £5 may be worth trying if he buys the car.

I have bought one for the nieces car but not used it yet and no foul smells, just maintenance

Thumbs Up

United Kingdom 2012 Range Rover Sport SDV6 Autobiography Santorini Black

Hi Wilpert,

I had exactly the same thing, 2012 Autobiography but stank of smoke, the dealer did 3 ozone treatments but just covered it up rather than solving the problem.

I cleaned the card myself and never came back, here is what I did:

Set the AC on full blast HOT and get the interior as hot as you can get it, put the seat warmers on and steering wheel warmer (I was told this opens up the pores of the fabrics)

Clean everything, I mean everything.
I used hi-foam autoglym on the roofliner and other sensitive surface and worked it with a microfibre
Autoglym interior shampoo everywhere
Interior shampoo again
And again.
Next up get a wetvac and wetvac everything including under the seats and fold the back seats down and wetvac under there. Also dont forget the seatbelts
Wetvac again
Let it dry and wetvac again
Use Autoglym odor eliminator everywhere
Use Leather cleaner on all leather surface, work it in with a leather brush, dry off and do it again. (You will need to protect the seats again once finished)
Replace the pollen filter under the glovebox
User the maguires air bomb mentioned earlier on with the AC on full blast cold.(With the doors shut obviously)

That should do it, if not start again. But for me it was cigar smoke and the above pretty much got rid of it, I did another round a month later and it's never come back. Just make sure you put the leg work in and don't miss anywhere.

Feel free to PM me if you want to know anything else.

Mine originally smelled of cigar smoke (bit more classy than cigarettes at least).

It is really just a matter of cleaning everything thoroughly. Windows are important as volatiles condense on the cool surface. Clean the seats with leather cleaner and treat them with a feed. Clean the carpets and headliner with Autoglym Interior Shampoo and clean the trim with the Rubber and Vinyl Cleaner. I used a Comma air conditioning 'bomb' and that a made a big difference. Obviously changing the cabin filter makes a big difference too. The smell will eventually clear but it takes a bit of effort and time.

EDIT - sorry that post overlapped with Gerds's and he described it better! 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

^^
Unlikely; the previous owner lived in Hertfordshire and daughters had ponies (judging by the amount of hay under the back seat). 2008 MY Java Black TDV8 HSE

I bought an e46 that had a dash fire and the fire brigade had done a good job of flooding the car which then stood for months with a big hole in the screen, after repairing the car I decided to try and save the carpets and the leather seats which were both very light beige but stained black so I spoke to an autosmart dealer and he recommended biobrisk which I scrubbed in and vaxed out and it came up like new and smelt amazing and I would be shocked if it didn't get rid of stale cigs smell. Good luck with it
