Letter back from Landrover re damaged wheels

Here's the letter I received in the post this morning, word for word. And yes, that first four words ARE gramatically incorrect, and that's from LR, not me. (A small thing, but it matters)

My thoughts along the way are in bold.

25th August 2006

Dear Mr Wormleighton,

Thank for your letter dated 20th August, Mr Mullholland has moved on to another part of our business. Mr. Brett Phillips is the new Customer Relations Manager and as he is currently away from the office he has asked me to reply on his behalf.Fine with me, shows they are not leaving it to fester.

I am familiar with the background of your case and I was naturally disappointed to learn of a recurrence of the issue with your alloy wheels. I note too, that we have previously provided you with a new set of alloy wheels as a gesture of goodwill. This is true, they have, and I am most grateful.

It seems apparent that your off road activities are not compatible with the wheels on your vehicle. WHAT? It may be that at the time you purchased your car that it was not fully understood what activities you intended to pursue off road. Yes, some mild off roading only! Is this car not suitable then? And not fully understood by who? Me? he salesman? The Range Rover Sport is a terrifically able off road vehicle, but it is not always practical to leave the motorway and head off road with the same equipment. Then why is it sold as an off road vehicle, why is there no mention that the SC in standard guise should not be taken off road?

Land Rover owners predominantly use their vehicles for high speed motorway travel (surely they mean Range Rover owners?), but they are of course used extensively off road too. Many owners, as you know, keep a separate set of wheels and tyres for their off road activities and it would seem that this may be the solution to your situation.OK, so where do I keep them, how easy is it to quickly swap them over, and more importantly, why the hell should I? I thought spending £60K on an off roader was enough without it being so precious that the tyres and wheels need to be swapped before going off road every single time! I can understand owners who do weekend competition work, RTV trials and regular 'testing' off roading to keep a set of Mud Terrain tyres on separate wheels but I am FAR from stretching the boundaries, here, I'm only doing really really mild stuff, a few fields..come on!

The other Range Rovers you mention have higher profiles (I assume he means higher profile tyres? Shame he does not actually say this - agaion a small thing but for an organisation like LR, this letter should not leave the door without the small things being checked.) which may well account for their unscathed progress, whereas the Sport with its lower profile (tyres), would benefit from more robust tyres in the environment you appear to be using it. (Hmm, grassy fields, a few gateways, some heather moorland, doesn't sound like extreme off roading or in the slightest bit challenging to me)

I would appreciate it if you could send some photographs of your wheels. Upon receipt of these I will be able to liaise with our Technical Department and respond accordingly. In the meantime, thank you once again for letting us know of your views and experiences.

Yours sincerely
