A friend of mine runs a smallish independent car rental company. Over 10 years in business he says that Mitsubishi is the most reliable brand followed by Toyota and Hyundai about the same. He doesn't have much long term data on of Kia as he has only added a few over the last 3 years, but they should be the same as Hyundai. He has a couple of Subaru XVs which are doing well. Because his business is independent he keeps his cars longer term so always looks for reliability. Gone - 2008 Stornoway Grey RRS 2.7 TDV6

Hi Muddy,

I went from a 2012 RRS to a PHEV nearly two years ago (the old shape), its on a 3 year lease through the company

Good Points:
1) Low BIK company car tax
2) No congestion charge for a £10 annual fee (if you regularly travel in the City this will save a small fortune)
3) Good MPG (especially on short journeys if you keep it charged)
4) Very nippy with no RRS 'lag"
5) The RRS seems old fashioned compared to this computer on wheels
6) Good interior space - tardis like
7) Very easy to drive and comfortable even on long journeys.
Very quiet in electric mode but you have to watch pedestrians walking out in front of you as they can't hear it !
9) Good remote app that controls climate control, preheating and charging

Bad Points:
1) Will only get about 30 mpg on long journeys, if your lucky
2) Only small fuel tank so if you use it for long journeys you will have to fill up frequently (approx. every 200 miles)
3) The 'bings and bongs' will drive you mad, especially if you get lane departure warning system as you can't turn it off
4) Slow opening and closing electric tailgate - you can go and make a cup of tea waiting for it.
5) Charging points at service stations used to be free but now £5 charge - not worth it as it only gets you 80% charge about 20 miles so petrol cheaper
6) Poor depreciation (look at prices of 3 year old ones), I think leasing is the way to go even if a personal lease, not sure how much it would cost to replace all or some of the battery cells but I bet they won't be cheap
7) No spare wheel, only canister of gunk but then most cars the same nowadays
Engine is used to charge the battery on the move so revs don't match the speed, wierd at first but soon get used to it.
9) Sometimes bluetooth drops out, seems the phone wi-fi conflicts with it, solution turn phone wi-fi off

Overall I don't regret the move to a PHEV and I would definitely have another one when the lease is up for renewal (even when the company BIK tax goes up)

Good points are music to my ears

Bad points thoughts -

1 & 2 - I usually do 10-30 miles per day so electric will be the norm - occasionally do further at weekends but if I get a second vehicle could be using that

3. Looked at HS with bings and bongs but apart from acc not sure it's worth extra £1700 and if I can't switch off definitely not worth it - my Thinkware has them and switched them off

4. DS is slow too opening

5. Agree petrol best now

6. I have my own company but accountants always advised not to lease - I will check with him as I'm told you can write off 100% with phev but not sure what that means for me? I thought depreciation was bad so without the £8-9k discount it's a non starter

7. I already have gunk on DS so again ok

9. Good tip and avoids security risk

The new models have a sound generator for pedestrian warning so that's ok

We seriously considered a 450h F Sport. As you say it drives nice and the dealer was offering quite an incentive for Sept delivery of stock cars. In the end 2 things decided us against it although I'm still not sure we made the right decision. One was the CVT gearbox and the second was the wife preferred a DIscovery Sport.

Just had chat with my accountant who is thinking of getting one too - reckons I will get £6k off my company tax 1st year, interest payments will be tax deductible and only cost me £500 personal tax plus no longer tieing up my money in vehicle and paying loans out of personal cash already taxed

He has clients with them now doing similar miles to me on a tank of petrol every 6 months
