TDV6 2007 faults, all sorts. Randomly sticks it in limp mode

Hi, my 2007 HSE TDV6 has been kicking up all sorts of faults and the land rover specialists I took it to were useless MDP land rovers in raglan Monmouthshire (more on that in a bit). The fault happens randomly but it will suddenly kick up a fault and go through a series of errors, I'll put pictures but the first error it says is a transmission fault and limited gears are available, then it will say, HDC fault and then an engine system fault. Their will be an immediate loss of power and it will then go into a sort of limp mode. If I turn it off and on sometimes it will clear it and be fine for a while, other times it will have the F icon on the display and have a weird range of gears available. Sometimes it will also flash up the ride height icon on the dash and I've noticed that the reservoir for the ride height has been losing fluid somehow.

Other faults are the rear parking sensors aren't working and their is a horrible knocking noise when I'm driving. Is the drive shaft going? CV boot?

Also when going round corners, sometimes the brakes seem to lock on slightly. MDP thought the steering column sensor was out of alignment. When they had it to fix they said that hey had re calibrated it to fix? It hasn't.

The exhaust was kicking out a lot of black smoke. MDP land rovers replaced the exhaust with one from a breakers yard and it turned out that this one has a hole as it makes a horrid whistling sound when accelerating. Could this be causing the knocking or rattling. The black smoke has gone so that's good.

The car has recently had and passed an MOT with the only advisory being the steering column has some slight play. All the work was done by MDP and they had the vehicle for 3 solid weeks and managed to only do an MOT and change a faulty exhaust for another faulty exhaust. They also had the vehicle on a couple of occasions previously but. Have only said they have cleared the fault codes. Has anyone else had an experience with MDP? I would say they are useless and have been far from what I would expect of a specialist.

Can anyone offer advice on the faults or even recommend anywhere to go. I'm from Herefordshire. Sorry it was a long one but after taking it to the garage 3 times to fix the faults and I am no where nearer to sorting it I'm getting towards the end of my tether and I can't sell it with so many faults.

Thanks for reading

How is your battery alternator working ok ?
Black smoke is normally a split inter cooler pipe feel around the large black pipe on the left hand side of your engine to see it you can feel a split mine went on the bend the pipe comes out the engine and turns down easy to swap 61 AB 5.0 supercharged rocket

Hi, not sure about the alternator. How would I check that? what problems would a bad alternator cause. As for the exhaust it doesn't kick out black smoke anymore since the exhaust was changed. The problem now lies in their being a hole in the exhaust that causes a whistling noise.

Low battery power can give you lots of faults that are just because there's a lack of voltage Try a local auto electrician and see if they can test your alternator output
If you do a search on Here it will tell you what the correct readings are meant to be and what to turn on and off to see voltage drops 61 AB 5.0 supercharged rocket

For a start, there is no fluid in the ride height system. Sounds like you have dynamic anti roll bars. If it's losing fluid then it's leaking. Get that sorted because a failing anti roll bar will cause some other issues if the stability system gets confused. This might be why your brakes apply.

The knocking noise needs more info. Is it at low speed when turning or something else? A ticking noise at low speed with lick applied points to the CV joint. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

The mechanic failed to find a leak and put some sort of conditioning treatment in to help with the seals apparently. That was what he said the first time I took it to him. The second time he said it could be a ram?? Leaking. And that that part would need replacing? What ram? The third time he said he re calibrated something. Either way the reservoir still needs topping up often and the fault still occurs, but what you are saying makes sense.

As for the knocking noise it isn't always there but when it does it is a ticking at low speed much like you say. Doesn't matter if I'm turning but I hear it going forward and reversing. Sometimes feel it in the pedals. Cheers for replying

The anti roll bars are effectively a hydraulic ram connecting the two ends of the bar. They sometimes leak. If it is leaking from the ram part then you need a new bar. That'll be £1200-1500... Big Cry

Sounds like you need to take it to a proper LR indie... 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders

Cheers for the advice. Is there a treatment I could put into the fluid reservoir that might help the seals or stop the leak? Similar to what you can put into the power steering reservoir?

Cheers
