RRS Purchasing Help

Hi all,

New member here - I have been lurking for a few weeks now, reading as much as I can before this post.

Our new baby boy has forced my hand into changing cars. My current car is an Audi A5 Black Edition Coupe - a car that I love and cherish but the lack of room and rear seat access means I need to go bigger to carry all of the paraphernalia that goes with having a young baby. Having never owned a 4x4 before, I had narrowed the search down to a LCI X5, Q5 and a facelift RRS - finalising on the facelift RRS, ideally in HSE spec.

Budget - ~£18-20k
Mileage - sub 70k

Must have black leather, ideally with non wood dash inserts.

Other than that, I am pretty open! Colour preferences are black or grey but not critical. Is the 3.0 the one to go for? I am not fussed on high end performance so would prefer the more reliable engine in that regard.

What are the main things to look out for?

Are there any variations depending on year?
Full land rover history present - essential
Have the belts been done? (Due at 7 years?)
Do the same suspension issues apply to the facelift?
Would this spec of vehicle be applicable for a LR warranty? Typical costs?
Complete a mega flush upon purchase
Proper tyres - factor in cost if not on car

Have you had a look at one in real life rather than just pictures? The reason I ask is that the rear doors don't give great access to the rear seats which might make a new baby a tricky proposition. People do, of course, but you should make sure the space works for you and yours.

You've listed two TDV8s. They don't have cam belts so you don't need to worry about that issue. The rest of the hardware is much the same across the pre- and post-facelift versions apart from the dynamic pack. Land Rover's warranty is available up to 10 years old and/or 100,000 miles whichever is sooner. The limits apply on the day of warranty purchase so you can get the warranty at 99,000 miles and still be covered for a year, for example.

A gearbox flush is a great idea at the age/mileage shown on your two examples.

I note that the first example has the extremely rare locking rear differential. You don't need it, to be honest, unless you intend to go properly off road (and even then it's only a nice-to-have). No harm in having it but it takes a different oil to the standard diffs so it needs to be remembered at the appropriate service point.

Which ever you go for, make sure that the service history is fully up to date - 15,000 miles or 12 months between each stamp. Many are done at one or the other and thus are incorrectly scheduled. The history doesn't have to be LR. A decent LR indie would probably be a better thing to see in the book. LR dealers are very patchy and expensive. It's possible that preventative stuff wasn't done in order to keep costs down because of that. 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Hi Lee2050

Same deal with me,came from Audi A5 Cab,as said you need to try be for you buy,with regards car seat,buggy etc.
I went with RRSport specialist dealer,more than happy to loan me my car for W/end..signed my life away for it,but it made my mind up.
Full S/H is a must,as said already from other members,plus I went with low mileage/yr,so as to eliminate potential issue's

South Africa 2013 Range Rover Sport Supercharged Siberian Silver

Hi guys, I'm considering trading in my 2011 D4 SE (95Kkm) and getting an RRS TDV8.

They are quite rare here in ZA, so finding one with sub 100,000km will be a challenge.

Anything else other than the gearbox flush around that mileage?

I always thought Sports were quite big in the rear when I had them previously until I got another a year ago. I have a 3 year and another due in a couple of months. As someone said the doors dont give a great deal of space to fanny around getting them in/ out of their seat and the general rear leg room is poor on such a large car. The height of seat can also be an issue if your wife is short but this would be the same on any 4x4

If I had the choice again I'd go for a FFRR just for the extra space in the rear

hi all, i have another question: TDV6/SDV6 or TDV8?

The TDV6/SDV6 seems to be prone to crankshaft failure in the Disco4, is this problem also on the RRS?

At first the reports were only on the 2.7 TDV6, but since then numerous D4s with the 3.0 SDV6 have also suffered the same fate in South Africa.
