Crankshaft failure after 40k miles!?

I bought a 2010 RRS 3.0 TDV6 in December last year, only 37k miles on the clock and seemed well looked after. Ive put another 4k miles on myself since without issue. Car has been regularly serviced, most recently 6 weeks ago by a local Land Rover specialist.

Last week I pulled away from some lights and the car completely died with no build up or any sounds to suggest anything was going wrong before. It was towed to the same guys who serviced it and they've advised the engine had completely seized and on taking it apart found the crank had 'catastrophically' failed. They're now pricing me up for rebuild or a complete replacement engine!
The car was sold to me with a 12 month RAC 'platinum' warranty, but Im aware of most of these aren't worth the paper they're written on.

I've read a few threads on these boards (and others) of people suffering similar issues and that its a inherent issue with these engines that JLR know about. Looking for opinions on whether I should contact JLR directly about (even though the car is out of JLR warranty), or whether that would be a complete waste of time. Also, if I should push for a repair of the existing engine or complete replacement.

Any help greatly appreciated.

I would be ringing JLR. A 6 year old car with 37K should not have an engine failing catastrophically.

They should pay half the costs as a minimum in my mind.

Thanks Hog. What part of JLR did you speak to that eventually sorted it for you?
I'm currently being passed around from dept to dept and not really getting anywhere.

This issue is also appearing a few times over on the Disco 4 site.

3.0 engines seem to be showing a weakness.

Id get JLR customer services involved asap.

Best of luck. All things transport and logistics, international and national shipping.
Its a small planet after all.

Thanks for all the replies.

Update from my end. Engine is currently being completely replaced by my local LR specialist. To my amazement the RAC warranty agreed to cover the entire cost without batting an eyelid (all £7k worth...).

I didn't get anywhere with JLR, seemed impossible to speak to someone with the level of authority to actually make a decision. Luckily the warranty came through on this occasion.

Hopefully have my RR back by the end of next week, I can't face driving round in the heap of Censored Citreon C3 they gave me as a courtesy car for much longer!!

Good to read that the engine will be swapped! Congratulations! I was happy with LR' s decision to replace mine. However the new engine proved to be a lemon that knocked. Can you believe it? They are are now in the process of replacing it with an other one. (after numerous testing).
My car is at the dealership since March.

Outcome of my friends crank failure.
Land rover say they will pay half but have quoted Shocked £10.000 for engine plus £4.000 to fit Shocked .
Solicitors looking into it.
I would think more to follow.
