HDC Fault, Transmission Fault, Special Programs Not Availabl

Hi All,

Most of us may have come across this fault over the years however I cannot appear to get rid of it!!

HDC Fault, Transmission Fault, Special Programs Not Available, suspension lowered.

I changed the battery last week hoping this will disappear but unfortunately it hasn't.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Brake bulbs? 2012 SDV6 - it's missing a couple of cylinders
2008 TDV8 - it was a labour of love and is much missed

Had this issue on a 2005 s/c if I remember rightly it was caused by a simple brake switch....cost about £20 to sort BMW 530D 2011 still here

Brakes bulbs all working perfectly fine.

I will order a brake switch now and perhaps try that..

Any other suggestions?

From my experience and research

Check your cars screen and see if the diagram of your steering shows that the wheels are all straight in line when your STEERING WHEEL is straight. This was my issue.

Make sure you have original brake light bulbs and I mean ORIGINAL

Visually check your brake wear sensors, tyre sizes and wear on the tyres to see if anything is out of place

Check your pads or the discs or even the disc guard if anything is catching or any fenders that may be getting caught

Constantly try to provoke the fault to come on so you can try to work out what trigger it - try full locks, reversing, slow driving, up kerbs, lower the car before starting, raise before starting etc - do some legwork and you could save some money on throwing parts at it

I get the same message but only occasionally. It seems to occur when I haven't used the car for a week or so. I was suspecting low charge on the battery triggering the message as when its had a good run for a few consecutive days it doesn't occur. Don't ask me why or how but that's how it seems to work.

Oh yes, as junior says this can also be battery related / alternator

Junior you should try getting it on a charger - I forget the name its the gold one Ctek thats it! - great investment for any car

Or get a motorfactors to test and charge it

Hi there,

Im new to the forum as I'm at a loose end and i really need some technical advice.

Yesterday i was driving down the motorway in my TDV8 when all of a sudden i had an arrangement of lights come up on the dash followed by all these warnings, HDC Fault, ABS ect.

This morning i looked on the forums where it suggested i change the battery or the brake light switch, i used snap on modis ultra to read fault codes, almost every error code had popped up!!! so next i bought a brand new battery and tried that, it didn't work, then i went to land rover to buy a new switch which i fitted in a matter of minutes but the problem still persists.

Does anyone know what else could be causing these problems, the car drives fine btw. 2008 3.6tdv8 hse

I'm thinking maybe a speed sensor or abs sensor but i don't want to go down the road of taking it in to the stealers and walking away a couple thousand pounds down without trying to fix it myself.

any advice would be greatly appreciated thanks

Welcome to the forum but Please read this thread from the start as we have all taken the time to reply with suggestions and personal experience.

Also use the search function on the forum as this is a very common fault covered many times but with many different outcomes - this problem has many issues that can cause it

Hopefully you can enjoy your car again soon

Looking at the cars 4x4 info it showed front wheel was slightly right when I had steering wheel straight ahead. So the car couldn't understand when I drove why this was and locked off all functions... and gave the 3 amigos aka Hdc fault.

what I tried was to fool the system to see if it worked and it actually did but it wasn't the best method and I am now trying to persuade the correct method as I have a little more turn to the right on full lock.

So what I did was have 4 wheel alignment done and when it came to fronts I told the chap I wanted him to align it from where I say it's straight... so I used the 4x4 diagram screen to show me what the car thought was straight then got the chap to do alignment according to that. Bingo no more HDC fault as the car was happy. Steering wheel was off to the right but got that off and straightened it and re bolted on.

Now the alignment chap said he used up alot of the turns to get it at that point which was somethinf to bare in mind for me.

So although it worked I now after much research have found out that steering can be reset or recalibrated to put it back to central point with certain software so had I have known this before I could have just got that done first rather than the other two things.

anyways after all that just want to say check your screen as I said above and also if you can get it scanned to see the steering calibration it might be out hence sending conflicting info to the car.

oh and one more thing I learned from a bad experience with a mercedes was YAW or lateral sensors... Google it ... but I'm sure a proper diagnostic would bring that up

Guys just to add a quick note which may be helpful for someone someday as this problem is a nightmare..

Right so I had the steering recalibrated for a laugh with the steering wheel slightly to the right (which would have been the original straight ahead position for the wheels before tracking)

Wheels show //
Steering wheel shows //
Recalibrated this to 0 or straight ahead

As soon as I drove off HDC fault came on.

So this issue can definitely be the steering calibration and an easy way before buying any bits and bobs could be to get the car read and see if everything is in order.

I then got the steering wheels as below
WHeels ||
Steering wheel ||
Recalibrate to computer as straight ahead or 0

and now the error has gone thankfully

Thanks for sharing your experience, as it goes my steering wheel is already slightly to the right when I drive straight.... Maybe having the wheels aligned and steering reset is a starting point, just before I bought the car apparently it had new bushes all round so failing that it could be a damaged sensor ect.
I'm going to a Land Rover specialist today if I get a chance and I will try and draw as much knowledge out of them as I can in regards to these faults.

Any other suggestions other than battery or brake pedal sensor would be much appreciated.
