Land Rover Thefts Alert Herts

Quote:
A number of addresses in Radlett were targeted by the thieves, who stole four Land Rover Range Rovers and one Land Rover Discovery keyless start.

I've highlighted the free security measures that should help and cause very little inconvenience Cool

Crime prevention advice

Never hand vehicle keys over to a third party or leave the vehicle unattended at a valet parking, car wash or other parking places, where criminals can gain access to the vehicle and code a key electronically.

• Consider fitting an ‘OBD safe’ device, a secure lockable device that fits over the vehicle’s on board diagnostic port, in the vehicle cabin. This prevents criminals using software to code a key from the vehicle. Devices that are Thatcham approved can be obtained from www.tieronevehiclesolutions.com.

If your vehicle has a keyless entry system ensure you place the vehicle tablet key in your home address, as far away from the vehicle as possible, ideally place the key in a metal box.

• Consider fitting a dual band tracking device that works on VHF/UHF and GPS, to ensure that one tracking system is still functioning if criminals use GPS blocking techniques to avoid detection. Devices approved by Thatcham and Secured by Design help to combat this type of vehicle theft, as vehicles equipped with a tracking device are often promptly recovered.

Criminals can also employ remote/keyless entry jamming equipment so make sure your car is locked by trying the door before leaving it.

Ensure that ‘home’ on your vehicle’s sat nav is shown as the post code of your local police station and not your actual home address.

If advertising your vehicle for sale online, ensure that the registration number is not displayed when photographed to avoid cloning of its identity

2013 Range Rover Sport SDV6 HSE Stornoway Grey

It's all good advice but unfortunately the vast majority of owners of Land Rover products don't read Internet forums or the printed motoring press until their car has disappeared from where they left it parked last and are unaware of the issues with keyless entry systems, I think most people using all the LR/BMW/Audi owners' forums are only too aware of the problems with keyless entry systems. Maybe it is time for some more bad publicity on "Watchdog" or similar consumer programs............. And for people to avoid buying LR products until the system is made totally secure. I have a suspicion that the cars involved are possibly older ones without InControl Secure or with the redesigned OBD port system. 2020 Pangea Green 1st Edition D240 New Defender 110 is here and loving it

I wish you were right Tim but I have evidence that the canbus can be accessed on latest LRs without entering the vehicle obd port and the read only KVM is vulnerable so it affects all years Sad

The smart key in tin or a shielded pouch is especially important Bow down Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

A short funny story for you to have a laugh at. Just after we purchased the vehicle, my wife, on first time out, locked it doing the double press on fob, she then checked the door, and it opened, she continued for five minutes before realising that if you have the keyless fob on you, you cannot check that the doors are locked, other than looking through window to see button position on the door open lever. That's pretty funny! Thumbs Up I have been known to do the reverse: that is, to attempt to open the door relying on keyless, trying to get "better reception" twisting my buttocks and groin around when the door won't unlock, only to realise I actually left the key fob inside the house. Embarassed

Can anyone recommend a shielded pouch? L405 P400e Autobiography (MY2020)... Silicon Silver / Espresso

I've just bought this on Amazon based on recommendation of another LR owner https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00QIE...&psc=1

I went for 3 so I can keep spare shielded too at home without using a tin - I now have a spare pouch but it was same as buying 2 Rolling Eyes

Not got it yet but will report back once it arrives and if an issue Amazon can be trusted to refund Mr. Green Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

I maybe a bit thick here, but if you never use the buttons on your key fob and only use the handle button to lock the doors would thieves be able to still "grab" the frequency channel of your key?? I take it they hang around nearby and wait for you to press the buttons on the fob then have a device which logs it. Is this correct? I never leave the keys with anyone other than main dealer so would my car be safe?

I like many here have been under the impression that due to low range of keyless entry it was safer than pressing button remote however the scumbags can now boost the signal from your house to car making it believe you are stood next to it with key Evil or Very Mad

http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/car-news/cons...yless-cars

For keyless entry to work the smart key is transmitting constantly unlike the normal button remote and they exploit this Rolling Eyes

It's now recommended you keep smart key in a tin or shielded pouch and only take it out to allow doors to unlock and start engine - the rest of the time it should be shielded Thumbs Up Wanted a Series 2 LR since childhood but previously owned MY16 Disco Sport HSE TD4 Auto, MY13 RR Sport Black Edition TDV6 Auto, MY10 RR Sport HSE TDV6 Auto, 2007 Freelander 1 Freestyle TD4 Soft Top, 2009 Freelander 2 GS TD4 Auto, 2007 Freelander 2 GS TD4, 2004 Disco 2 Metropolis Auto, 2002 Disco 2 GS, 2000 Freelander 1 SE TD4 SW

Good man, thank you very much. For the price on Amazon it's well worth purchasing a couple of those pouches just to be double safe. Thumbs Up

The Amazon one which is a very good price is only a 90db RF signal blocker, there are much better ones up to 110db Blocking, but anything around 100db will stop reception and cloning etc even if left next to back door.
I hope the shown Amazon one works well enough for anyone, obviously better than nothing, but personally, at a higher price, I would aim for 100db+ models, the lower spec are fine to stop phone reception or cut it down, but comparing price of our cars, is it worth it? Smile

Purely a personal view and no offence is meant to any members advice, comments or recommendations. Thumbs Up John
