United Kingdom 2005 Range Rover Sport Supercharged Vesuvius Orange
Not cranking

Tried to move my 2005 S/C Sport this morning and just a single click from the starter motor on turning the key, did it a couple of days ago but started after a few tries. I have put a battery charger on it and it seems charged.
I know these starters can be repaired by replacing the contacts and plunger inside the solenoid housing but has anyone got any tips on how to coax the old girl in to life as it has got to move.
Thanks

United Kingdom 2010 Range Rover Sport TDV8 HSE Bali Blue

I know you say the battery "seems" charged but it is difficult to tell this from a charger, the only way is to have it tested properly, I thought this of mine just recently thinking it was charged. Voltage wise it wasn't too bad but when checked by my local indie they said it was only holding 700 amps which was causing a lot of starting issues. New battery fixed it. 2010 RRS, TDV8

I must agree first thing to check properly is the battery, I have had similar on a previous car.
Then you can at least rule out the easiest and cheapest things to replace. Wink John

Thanks for the advice I left it on charge overnight and after about 20 clicks it turned over for about 2 seconds but did not start and after another 5 attempts started normally.
I will get the starter off and order the contacts and plunger.
Nothing worse than not knowing if it is going to start or not. Life's too short to drive boring cars !

Australia 2008 Range Rover Sport TDV6 SE Chawton White

I had the same symptoms on my TDV6 following about two years of difficult starting when cold. Battery was fine, I just got in one day and was greeted with a click instead of the starter firing.

After checking that the engine was still turning over properly, I pulled the starter motor and found the nut holding the main 12v feed running from the solenoid to the starter motor was gone. The only reason the car had been starting *at all* was because the said feed wire was by design, a bit longer than it needed to be, which meant it had a bit of spring tension in it which was in effect holding it onto the terminal. Amazingly this had worked for 2+ years until the connector had corroded so much that sufficient current could no longer go through it.

I cleaned it all up and installed a new nut good to go. Thumbs Up

Once you load test your battery, I would ensure the engine actually turns. If it does, the starter is easy to test once it is out. MY08 RRS TDV6, Chawton/Black, sunroof, hk, 268k km

Finally got round to sorting my starter motor issues today, managed to eventually wrestle the starter motor away from the car. Top bolt is a little tricky to get on, but got a short 3/8 socket on it after removing the heat shields. Stripped down the solenoid and the plunger was badly pitted as was both contacts. Opened up my EBay kit to find it had the wrong parts so cleaned up the old ones with a file, fitted the new plunger and gave it a test on the floor with a jump pack and all seemed fine. Refitted and all is good, quite surprised that nothing was seized, sheared or even a tight thread. Not bad for an 11 year old Land Rover.
Took it out for a spin and the bonnet switch needs replacing now Big Cry
Slight problem with the air suspension, It won't go in to access mode from normal ride height and goes in to extended mode, but it goes from off road to normal ok. It lowers and then goes back up. Life's too short to drive boring cars !
