Thanks guys, I guest I'm old school and I'm expecting pops and bangs from the box, £1800 seems fair, someone said £1100 in London.. Seems too good to be true, how long ago did you do yours? Has the repair held? And where did you have it done? I really need to take it to someone who knows these cars.

Also there is a slight delay in "R" as it takes a second for it to engage the gear after shifting the lever, did you have this and was that sorted as well?

It was fixed in May 2014, and has been good ever since, just over 10k miles on it. It was fixed by a AUtogearbox company my indie recomended, in MAnchester 07,TDV8,Black, Black Heated leather all round, Rear Entertainment with Headpones & Remote, TV, DVD, Pure Dab Digital Radio, Sidesteps, Adaptive Headlights, sunroof, now working fuel burning heater )))

I was quoted £2700 for a recon gearbox and torque converter from Bristol Autos. That price included all labour.

although I had the 'transmission fault' a few times and the limited gears message whiles on the 20" and climbing up a hill in Greenwich, I changed the wheels to 22" about a 8 months ago, do you think this made the gearbox issue worse?, I know bigger wheels can effect the gear ratios..

The wheels are unlikely to have made a significant difference. Most likely the stator bushing has worn, and the consequential contamination was masking the problem - when the oil is then changed, it is thinner and thus the issues appear. Update on the gearbox situation finally...

Firstly I hate it when I have an issue with the car and you google it and someone has asked about it on a forum, got advise and ideas then hasn't bothered to write about the solution ...

Now that's off my chest, so I spoke to loads of people that work on rr gear boxes and finally afrer driving my RRS in manual mode for over 2 months, I took it into someone in rainham, dropped it off last Thursday and picked it up today, recon torque converter, all new soft cluches, value body and £1800 later I'm the happiest RRS owner... Pulls like a train in every gear... Sweet.. So if your someone who's reading this after having a transmission fault message on the motor way and the message went away after you switched the car on and off, or you get the limited gears available when you put your foot down... Don't waste your money with a fluid change.. Even if a rr specialist says it will help..
Your box will need to be pulled, opened up and investigated.

That looks like the usual outcome of gear ratio codes. If the oil appears ok (yours looks terrible!) and is at correct level, you're almost certainly up for new clutches at a minimum, but I'd also test the valve body to make sure it's holding vacuum at the solenoids. MY08 RRS TDV6, Chawton/Black, sunroof, hk, 268k km

It's not a DIY job that's for sure, I just drove it up the M4 for 45 minutes at 70-80, no chimes or error messages at all...
Also there was a delay going into reverse and that's gone too... well happy.

Wasn't cheap but could have been a lot worse.

I had the same faults on the TDV6 2005 auto box. Was role loads of horror stories, took it to Murcury Cars in Hutton Brentwood Essex. They did a gear box service oil change and replaced a brake pedal switch and glad to say resolved the problem. Not all gear box jobs are a rebuild.

Although I'm now the proud owner of a TDV8 mate 😋 3.6 pure muscle in luxury. Love it,
