Brake lights not working ?

Hi ,

My brake lights seem to have stopped working , the light at the top of my tailgate still works correctly and I connected a trailer to my car and the trailer lights worked correctly , and when I put my side lights on they also light up , so I cannot understand why they don't light up fully when I press the brake pedal ??

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

I have looked at the bulbs and they look fine , they are 2 elements inside which look ok , and like j said the side light part is working , I didn't want to drive to halfords and buy new bulbs when there is probably nothing wrong with the ones that are in , both lights going off at the same time would suggest a fuse maybe ??

I wouldn't buy bulbs from halfords anyway.

Do you get a dashboard message to tell you the bulbs are out on yours ?

The high level light is wired on the same circuit as the others, so not a fuse or switch issue. Any other issue would have to affect either the tail filaments due to the common ground or the high level light and fuse if a dead short, and would be very unlikely to affect both sides at the same time, so we are back to the bulbs...

Never a bad idea to change them over regardless since they can cause such havoc. Check your alternator, because they could have been blown by a voltage spike.
